Jacks welcome Gwelup Croatia to the Campus on Saturday

We’ve reached the half way stage of the NPLWA season, and the Jacks will look to bounce back after three league defeats when they host Gwelup Croatia at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday.

We sit third on the table on 18 points, only one point behind second placed Perth SC, but 11 behind Floreat Athena.

Gwelup arrive at the campus after a 3-4 loss at Armadale last week, this after leading 2-0, with Mitch Oxborrow, Gustavo Giron-Marulanda and Jon Stynes, but they do have a talented side.

So, the game on Saturday is vital for Kenny Lowe’s side and he is confident they can get back to winning ways in the league.

“Last week was a difficult game for us, as many of the players knew Myles O’Neill who passed away on the Friday personally, so it must have been difficult for them, but fair play to Cockburn they took their chances and took the points,” he explained.

“Once again, we dominated possession but were sunk by two sloppy goals, but we move on and look forward to another tough game on Saturday against Gwelup.

“Saturday is the reverse fixture of our round one game where we won 2-1, but a lot has changed since then and we need to regain focus and look to get back to winning ways and start the second half of the season with a positive performance and I’m confident we will.”

The 20s, who are ninth on the table, host fourth-placed Gwelup at 1.00pm, and coach Mark Scanlan said his young side need to turn their possession into wins.

“At the halfway point of the season (pending the Balcatta catch up game) we are nowhere near where we aspire to be. You don’t get three points for dominating possession you get three points for wins,” he explained.

“So, we must learn ASAP how to convert that dominance of the ball into chances to score – plain and simple, so here’s to a better second half of the season starting Saturday against Gwelup.”

The 18s are coming off a win against Cockburn City last week, which moved them to seventh and they take on ninth-placed Gwelup on Saturday (11.00am) and coach Dimitri Phylactou has been pleased with his side in recent weeks

“At the moment the squad depth is really good which is pleasing but brings with it challenges for the coaches and the players,” he said.

“There is competition for places and the players must fight and be patient as they work their way into the starting 11.

“But the competitiveness in the squad will keep the intensity high and keep pushing the level and development of players higher as the second half of the season progresses.

“Our first game against Gwelup ended in a 1-1 draw so we are expecting another tough one on Saturday.”

Get along and support the Jacks.
