A week in football from the Campus

A week in football from the Campus

Posted on July 2, 2021 in 'News'

We head into another weekend of football at the ECU Campus, subject to the covid-19 lockdown restrictions being lifted, and there were some excellent performances and results across all teams last week.

Our NPLWA sides travelled to Alfred Skeet Reserve to take on Armadale. The first team were edged out 3-2, with Danny Hodson and Daryl Nicol scoring, but the unfortunate sending off of Shane Cassidy certainly changed the game.

The 20s came from 0-1 down at half time to run out 3-1, with goals from Ben Rutter and a brace from Jason Petrie, while the 18s were beaten 0-3.

This week the NPLWA senior sides games against Inglewood United at the ECU Football Stadium have been postponed due to the covid outbreak in the north, this despite the lockdown being lifted.

Last week our Women’s State League Division One side bounce back to winning ways with a great 3-1 win against Perth AFC. Toby Wright’s side made the perfect start and were ahead on seven minutes, a short corner from Murray to Tinette van Niekerk, saw her whip in a teasing cross and 15-year-old Nadia Godley lost her marker to head home from five meters.

It was 2-0 three minutes later, a strong high press saw the Jacks win possession and Talissa Hollis played the ball to Murray, who chipped the ball over to Van Niekerk, who raced into the box and finished clinically.

It was a perfect start for the side, and it got better four minutes later when they added a third. Molly Elphick was brought down on the edge of the penalty area, and Murray found the corner of the net from the resulting free kick. “Overall a phenomenal first half performance from us we dominate well and made life difficult for Perth,” skipper Frankie Murray explained.

“In the second half as the conditions got worse, we slipped off a bit but we showed grit and determination to hold the lead we had and see the game out to the end.”

“A strong start led to three well worked goals, which was pleasing,” Head coach Toby Wright said. “The second half was a different story with Perth AFC being the aggressor scoring one and trying desperately to get something out of the game. But we remainder resilient in defence lead by keeper Ash Ridley blocking every attempt coming her way. With serval Amateurs players being available today it was a real squad effort and good to get back to winning ways.” They are back in action again on Sunday with a trip to Alfred Skeet Reserve to take on Armadale – kick off 3.00pm (Subject to confirmation)

Our Amateur women’s side had the bye last week, but are back in action on Sunday when they host Curtin University at the ECU Football Stadium – kick off 1.00pm. (Subject to confirmation)

In other Womens program games – The 12s girls played UWA Nedlands at home and once again coach Gareth James was delighted with his side’s performance. “We have headed into the mid-season break following a tight contest against an excellent UWA Nedlands team,” he said.

“Both teams played good football from start to finish with good opportunities at each end. ECU put in a very solid defensive display, with calm heads under pressure.” – Goals this week from Daisy Snowden (2), and Peyton Grace.

The Masters North Division Three side produced a great performance away at Olympic Kingsway, and came home with the three points after a nine-goal thriller.

Tommy Jones and Dave Chapman both scored doubled, while the goal of the game came from player/coach Rick Rancatore, well that’s what he said, to secure the 5-4 win. They are back in action on Sunday when they make the trip to E&D Litis Stadium to take on Floreat Athena – Kick off 3.00pm (Subject to confirmation)

Our NPLWA junior hosted Floreat Athena in the White Division last week and all games were very entertaining. The under 13s ran out 4-0 winners, with goals from Zac Scrivens, Andrew Bushell, Jack Lennon and Caolan Purcell. The result leaves the Jacks second, four points behind leaders Subiaco, but do have two games in hand.

The 14s had a hard fought 3-2 win, with Jack Connolly scoring a brace with Matthew Bowen scoring the other. The win moving the Jacks four points clear at the top of the table.

The 15s fought out a very entertaining 1-1 second placed Floreat Athena, with Yohannes Toto scoring the goal, the point leaving the Jacks in third place on the table on goal difference.

The 16s also drew 1-1, in an entertaining top of the table clash with leaders Floreat Athena. Myles Mari scored for the Jacks, the point leaving them second on the table.

The NPLWA sides were also in Cup action on Saturday, with the 13’s producing the performance on the day, beating Morley Windmills 14-0. Aaron Mukundu scored a hat-trick, with Jack Lennon, Lachlan Carrico, Andrew Bushell and Alfie Hewings scoring doubles, with singles to Atli Oskarsson, Zac Strivens and Shane Stronell.

The 14s also progressed to the next round after 9-1 win against Joondalup United. Matthew Bowen, Jack Connolly and Teddy O’Shea all scored two, with Alex McMullan, Kosta Jovanovic and an own goal the others.

The 15s bowed out of the competition after a 2-5 loss against Bayswater City away. It started well for the Jacks with Rohan Patel and Roland Ballah giving us a 2-0 lead, but Bayswater hit back to seal the win.

The 16s moved through with a hard fought 3-1 win against Murdoch University Melville at the Campus, with goals from Leroy Ncube, Archie Russell and Xavier Medica.
