Jacks let it slip late in Derby

The Jacks have slipped to sixth on the NPLWA table after conceding a stoppage time goal to lose 23 to local rivals Sorrento at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It started so well for Kenny Lowe’s side with Danny Hodgson on target on the quarter hour, but Scott Witschge levelled before the break. Witschge gave the visitors the lead after the break, but Hodgson levelled, his tenth goal of the season.

Both sides went for the winner, but it was Sorrento who found it with second half substitute Jordan Pokler scoring at the back post.

Lowe made three changes to the starting side that were edged out at Armadale last time out, with Jeremy Tshongo, Chris Harold and Riley Woodcock coming into the side, with Tommy Amphlett and Shane Cassidy unavailable, Nelson Tshongo dropping to the bench.

It was the visitors who were on the front foot early, with Witschge having an early sighter firing just wide after only two minutes, and moments later they went even closer.

Former ECU midfielder Ollie Annis whipped in a teasing free kick which flicked off the head of defender Luke Palmateer and hit the base of the far post and away to safety.

But the Jacks lifted and started to get on top and they were ahead on 15 minutes. It came from a Sorrento corner, and a quick break from Andy Higgins saw him feed Daryl Nicol down the left, the striker racing into the box and unselfishly crossing to Hodgson at the back post, who scored from close range.

But Sorrento hit back and were level ten minutes later. A long ball from Neil Gillies was flicked on by Chris Jackson, and Witschge raced into goal, his first effort was blocked by Johnny Perkins, but the striker got to the rebound to roll the ball into an empty net.

The game was end-to-end, but the pitch wasn’t the best to play football on, with the rain earlier in the week leaving it in a poor condition. But the chances still kept coming, Jackson saw a shot saved low at his near post by Perkins, before Chris Harold curled over the top from the edge of the box.

The hosts thought they had a penalty four minutes before half time, Tom Hough sending Hodgson clear, he raced into the area and seemed to be pushed in the back by David Stokoe, but referee Shane Skinner was well placed to wave away their protests, but at the break it was all to play for.

It was Sorrento who hit the front for the first time, ten minutes into the second half. Jacks’ defender Jeremy Tshongo saw his clearance go straight to Witschge just outside the penalty area, and he made him pay, finishing low past Perkins.

But ECU hit back and piled on the pressure on the Sorrento defence and they restored parity on 66 minutes, Harold slipped Riley Woodcock into the left side of the penalty area, his shot was saved low by Connor Campbell, but the Hodgson was in the right place to fire home the rebound for his tenth goal of the season.

Perkins then had to be alert, making a smart save to deny Witschge a hat-trick moments later, before Campbell was out quickly to save at the feet of Hodgson, as the game opened up.

The Gulls had the ball in the net on 83 minutes, Jordan Roberts turning the ball home, but the flag was up for offside. Sorrento were ending the game the better and when Annis picked out second half substitute Daniel Faichney, who first shot was blocked by Perkins, and the keeper pounced on the his second.

But it was Sorrento who won it two minutes into stoppage time. Dean Cummings sent Roberts down the right, and his low cross was turned home by the unmarked Pokler at the back post.

It wasn’t a good day at the Campus with Sorrento winning all three games. It was an eight goal thriller in the 18s, Sorrento running out 5-3 wins, while in the 20s Sorrento won 3-2.

The Jacks first team thoughts are now focused on next week’s State League Cup Final against Floreat Athena at Inglewood Stadium – Kick off at 5.00pm
