Jacks let it slip at Rockingham

A goal three minutes from time from Rockingham City skipper James Harmer has given them a 2-2 draw against the Jacks in Week 16 of the NPLWA at SafeRad Stadium, at Lark Hill on Saturday afternoon.

Dale McCulloch’s side were ahead early when Shane Cassidy converted from the penalty spot, and they doubled their lead with a stunning long-range shot from Joe Knowles just after the half hour.

Lydon Hodgkiss pulled one back for the home side in first half stoppage time, but they then had Mitch Firth sent off and it looked like ECU would leave with the points, until Harmer had the final word. Photography by Jonny Warrington – www.jonnywarringtonphotographer.com

The home side had the first chance in this one on three minutes, James Millard’s shot on the turn was saved by Johnny Perkins. But three minutes later it was the Jacks who opened the scoring.

Knowles was picked out by Henry Durr, and despite losing possession his tenacity to get it back saw him brought down by Harry Collins, and referee Tom Glavovic pointed straight to the spot. Knowles, who was in his first game back after injury, received treatment, before Cassidy fired home the spot kick.

Moments later Rockingham went close to the leveller, Harmer sent clear down the right, his shot flashed inches past the far post. But it was the Jacks who doubled their lead on 38 minutes, a long ball from Nick Koefler found Knowles on the edge of the penalty area, he held off his marker before firing into the top corner on the volley.

Rockingham had a chance to pull on back on when they received a free kick on the edge of the penalty area, but Lydon Hodgkiss’ free kick clipped the top of the bar as it flew over the top. But in stoppage time Rockingham did pull one back, Millard’s cross wasn’t cleared by Ryan McDarby and Hodgkiss pounced to fire home.

The home side had their tails up after the break and Rob Galvin’s corner found Harmer, whose shot was tipped onto the bar by the alert Perkins, then from the resulting corner Hodgkiss headed inches wide. But on the hour the game took another twist when Rockingham were reduced to ten-men.

A ball over the top from Charlie Kenna looked like sending Knowles in on goal, but Firth stretch out his arm and handled the ball and referee Tom Glavovic had no other decision but to send the defender off.

Moments later the Jacks should have added a third, Andy Higgins’ corner wasn’t deal with and Knowles’ shot on the turn beat everyone in the box and drifted just wide of the far post. Knowles then hit the post as the Jacks looked to put the game to bed, but those missed chances came back to haunt them, as Rockingham levelled on 88 minutes.

A long ball from Hodgkiss sent Harmer racing clear, and he held off his marker and finished low past Perkins. The visitors pressed late and Knowles’ shot was saved low by Michell Farmer, and both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
