Jacks head to Rockingham in Week 16

ECU Joondalup make the trip to SafeRad Stadium at Lark Hill on Saturday, when they take on Rockingham City in week 16 of the Football West NPL.

The Jacks fought with ten men to draw with Stirling Lions last week, while Rockingham were well beaten by Sorrento, so this one is a real six pointer.

Rockingham skipper James Harmer will be vital in this one, along with the talented Riley van Dieken and Lydon Hodgkiss, but they do have a good record at Lark Hill, so the Jacks will need to be at their best.

Jacks midfielder Charlie Kenna scored late to give them a 1-1 draw last week, and he will be pushing for a spot in the starting side after some good performances off the bench. They will be without Billy Quinncroft, who is suspended, but do have Joe Knowles back from injury and the inform Jamal Reiners.

Jacks head coach Dale McCulloch said to score late last week with ten men showed the great character they have. “I was really happy with the lads last week, we could have gone back in our shell and let Stirling run over us after Billy’s sending off, but we never we stood firm and earned a valuable point,” he explained.

“It showed me the character we have within the squad, and I’ve spoken to Billy about his sending off, and he knows my thoughts, but it’s back to business against Rockingham on Saturday.”

McCulloch said it’s a huge game for both sides and he said they are looking forward to it. “They (Rockingham) have a good home record and it’s a difficult to place to go, but we are full of confidence we can get the job done,” he explained.

“We have a few niggles from last week, but it looks like we have a full squad to choose from apart from Billy and Arran Maplestone.

“Charlie Kenna, Joe Knowles and Lukas de Lima came off the bench last week and gave us a lift and they will all be in contention on Saturday, so it’s a great selection headache to have.”

One player returned from injury is defender Ryan McDarby, but after two good games in the 20’s he is putting his hand up for a starting role this week.

“It’s always disappointing to get injured, especially when you’re in the side but the boys have had some good results over the past few weeks so it’s been pleasing to watch,” he explained.

“I’m back fit now and had a couple of games in the reserves so I’ll be ready to go when the opportunity comes up this week.”

McDarby said all games are important until the end of the season, starting with a difficult trip to Rockingham on Saturday.

“Every week now is a big game for us, obviously we aren’t where we want to be in terms of league position but we have shown that we are up for the fight and are unbeaten in the second half of the season,” he said.

“We want to keep that going on Saturday at Rockingham, and if we do that, we will keep climbing up the table.”
