Healing hits four to trump the Jacks

Healing hits four to trump the Jacks

Armadale striker Ellis Healing scored four times as they beat ECU Joondalup 4-1 in week three of the QBE Night Series at Percy Doyle Reserve on Sunday afternoon, while Josh Booysen scored ECU’s consolation goal

It was the second defeat in the competition for the Jacks and Coach Dale McCulloch was a disappointed man after the game and said it was another disappointing display.

McCulloch brought in Rixer for Josh Tuker and Oliver Annis and Paul Miller started in place of the suspended Ryan Lowry and Jack Oldham, with Shane Pickering dropping into the centre half spot, while Jamie Serra was between the posts with Dave Keenan dropping to the bench.

It was another disastrous start for ECU and they were behind after only seven minutes, Armadale striker Healing turning home Jesse Fuller’s cross from the right.  Healing, a former Tranmere Rovers Youth striker added his second ten minutes later, curling a corner from the right directly into the net.

ECU looked to hit back and they looked like they had won a penalty on the half hour when Pickering was bundled over in the box, but referee Tom Dowle waved away the players and coaching staffs protests.

But eight minutes later Armadale added a third, and Healing completed his hat-trick. Jake Sardelic’s cross to the back post was fired home by the striker from six-yards.

In the final minute of the half ECU had a chance to pull one back. Annis’ free kick picked out Booysen, but his header flashed inches over the top.

ECU lost Joseph Jones to an ankle injury at the break with Kye Douglas coming on to replace him. With McCulloch’s half time address still ringing in their ears ECU wanted a good start but it was Armadale who added another three minutes in. ECU gave the ball away in defense and Healing pounced, producing a superb long-range shot that gave Serra not chance.

It was now a case of keeping the score respectable, but to the credit of the players they pulled on back instantly. A free kick from Annis picked out Douglas, who first time shot was superbly tipped over the top by Alfie Brincat, and from the resulting corner Booysen headed home powerfully from eight-yards.

It was the best period of the game for the Jacks, and Gordon Smith raced clear of his marker on the left and crossed to the back post, but Bayley Montgomery-Brown was only inches away, before Booysen headed over again on the hour.

Smith was working tirelessly up front and the Scotsman went close on 75 minutes. Annis sent Booysen down the left, and his cross found the former Hearts striker, but his shot crashed off the post and back into the grateful arms of Brincat.

ECU did have the ball in the net five minutes from time, but Pickering’s header was adjudged offside, but it was close one.

Serra produced a good save to thwart the lively Alex Salmon late on, before Smith fired wide after being sent clear by Steven McGarry.

The Jacks will be hoping to bounce back next week when they take on Group B leaders Stirling Lions at their home ground Macedonia Park on Sunday 7.00pm kick off
