ECU Joondalup opened their 2015 PS4 National Premier League WA season with a 0-1 defeat at Dorrien Gardens against Perth Soccer Club on Saturday afternoon.

A Reece Vittiglia header midway through the second half won it for Taki Nicolaidis’ side but the game could have gone either way.

“We fought hard on Saturday and I thought we deserved something from the game,” ECU Coach Dale McCulloch said. “I thought the offside decision was a tough one on us, it looked to most people he was onside, but those decisions will even itself out during the season. We continue to work on our structures and will be up for a big game on Saturday against Bayswater.”

Perth Coach Nicolaidis said it was a tough game. “I was very pleased to get the points, and I felt that we had plenty of possession and control of the game,” he said. “ECU did very well defensively, but we kept our shape well, and it’s always nice to win the opening game of the season, so I’m delighted.”

The home side had plenty of possession early, Carlo Coelho forced ECU goalkeeper Jamie Serra into a good save, before Vittiglia headed wide from Calum O’Connell’s cross. The visitors went close moments later, Danny Dixon picked out new signing Josh Tucker, but his long-range shot flew inches past the post. Then on the half hour ECU had the ball in the net, Scott Bushby made space on the edge of the penalty area, his shot was saved by Alex Dunn, and the rebound fell to Dixon who fired home, but the flag was up for offside.  It was a tight affair but Perth went in level at half time.

After the break the lively Tommy Amphlett then found himself through on goal on the hour mark, but could not hit the target. Perth responded by having their best spell of the second half,  Rosindale and Vittiglia both forced Serra into fine saves from long range, before the pair combined on 67 minutes for the decisive goal. Rosindale cross found Vittiglia at the back post and the former Sorrento striker headed home past Serra. ECU pressed late but they couldn’t find the equaliser and it was Perth who began the season with the victory.
