Hannigan honoured as Lions beat ECU

Stirling Lions held a minutes silence to honour the passing of former coach Ernie Hannigan prior to kick off, and they then silenced ECU Joondalup running out 4-2 winners at Macedonia Park.  Brian Woodall opened the scoring early, but the visitors levelled soon after through Paul Miller. Robert Petkov and Teeboy Kamara but Rob Milevski side in control, before Steve Purton added a fourth on the hour. Miller added his second late on but the damage had been done. Photo right by Alasdair Beer.

ECU coach Dale McCulloch rued his side’s inability to capitalise on their early ascendency. “We’re not scoring goals at the right moments; we missed a couple of opportunities that I think changed the game,” he said. “We can’t keep conceding four goals, so we’ll work hard at the back and go from there.”

The visitors went close to the opener on the quarter hour. The lively Tommy Amphlett found space on the edge of the penalty area and his half volley whistled inches past the post. But Stirling showed them how to do it on 27 minutes. Purton hit on a counter attack and pulled the ball back to Woodall who finished past Jamie Serra. But McCulloch’s side hit back two minutes later, the Lions didn’t clear their lines and Miller toe poked home from close-range.

But they were only level for three minutes; Petkov was given far too much space, and fired into the corner of the net. The home side had keeper Connor Campbell to thank for maintaining their lead at the break, Miller’s curling shot from the edge of the penalty area was superbly saved by the Lions custodian.

The home side got on top after the break and they added a third six minutes in. English striker Woodall played in Kamara, and the striker fired home. It was 4-1 on the hour, with Purton racing clear after intercepting a poor ECU pass, his first shot was blocked but the ball found its way back to the defender, who blazed home from the edge of the penalty area.  ECU scored a consolation goal 20 minutes from time, with probably the goal of the game. Miller’s free kick went up and over the wall and into the top corner of the net giving Campbell no chance.
