ECU let it slip against Subiaco

Subiaco won their first game on the road this season, after a come from behind 2-1 win against a depleted ECU Joondalup at the ECU Football Stadium. Paul Miller had given the home side the lead at the break, but a brace from Kevin White after half time gave the visitors the three points.

ECU coach Dale McCulloch said having eight injured players, which include Jon and Andy Higgins and Charlie Comyn-Platt, was no excuse for their performance, but it demonstrated their current lack of depth. “I thought they were the better side today, but again we are just conceding sloppy goals and another set piece,” he said. “We had a really young back four today and it’s hard, but I think the senior players really need to stand up when you’ve got so many kids out there.”

It was even opening with chances few and far between. But the deadlock was broken on the half hour mark with a stunner. Teenage striker Bayley Montgomery was brought down on the edge of the penalty area, and Miller, the former Heidelberg United midfielder, curled the free kick up and over the wall into the net giving Ryan Montgomery no chance. Subiaco had plenty of possession but lacked the final ball in the final third, and had to settle for long-range shots which didn’t worry Jamie Serra.

But the visitors were out of the blocks early in the second half and were level three minutes in. White, who had been moved up front by Coach Gerry McEwan, was picked out at the back post and he headed home past Serra. Subiaco were now dominating and Joshua Booysen fired wide moments later, before skipper Nathan Diaz tested Serra. But with five minutes remaining the visitors got their reward. ECU was defending in numbers, but they left White on his own and he volleyed into the top corner of the net to win it.

“I thought we were the better team for the full 90 minutes and deserved the three points,” Subiaco striker Danny Milne said. “They scored against the run of play from a free kick, but the boys showed good fight to come back into the game and a couple great goals from Kevin (White), especially the second, to give us the three points. We have been very close to getting something out of every game we have played this season so hopefully we can kick on from here and start picking up more points.”
