A four goal blitz before half time has given Floreat Athena a stunning 5-1 win against ECU Joondalup at the E&D Litis Stadium.

A hat trick from skipper Ludovic Boi, including an audacious lob from the half way line, and others to Bobby Wilson and Clayton Arnez saw the home side home, while Tommy Amphlett scored the consolation goal for ECU.

“We didn’t defend well enough and got punished for it. That’s football,” ECU Coach Dale McCulloch said. “It was a disappointing performance from the lads which is something we haven’t had for a number of weeks, but if you give the opposition the easy chances we gave them today you will get punished and we did big time on this occasion.”

Floreat made the perfect start to the game with a goal after only three minutes, and what a goal it was. There looked little danger when Boi picked the ball up on the half way line, but he spotted ECU keeper Jamie Serra off his line and his lob dropped over the custodian’s head and into the net. It was a huge blow for the visitors but they hit back and levelled six minutes later. Jon Higgins’ corner was met by Jon Stynes, his header bounced off the crossbar and Amphlett fired home the rebound from close-range.

But the home side then went on a goal scoring spree scoring three goals in eight minutes to take total control of the game. First on 17 minutes Arnez was given far too much space in the area and fired low past Serra. Three minutes later Boi added his second, when he was left all alone from a corner to fire home. Then Wilson added a fourth on 25 minutes, the defender shot on the turn, beat Serra after a free kick was nodded down to him.

A shell shocked ECU coach Dale McCulloch made a triple change at the break, with Paul Miller, Stuart Montgomery and Josh Tucker coming on and they were more competitive after the break. ECU had a couple of half chances after the break that Floreat keeper Dejan Aleksic was more than equal to, but in truth they never looked likely to force a comeback. Boi then completed his treble and claimed the match ball in the 88th minute with a superb scissor kick that bounced high into the net.
