Bayley Montgomery goal in vain as Sorrento take out the Derby

Sorrento have won the ‘Northern derby’ after a 3-1 win against local rivals ECU Joondalup at the ECU Football Stadium.

Teenage striker Bayley Montgomery put the host ahead early, but Shaun Kilkelly levelled soon after. The visitors took the lead fifteen minutes from time through Brad McDonald, and three minutes later the points were made safe when Cian Hirrell scored into his own net.

Along with other injuries, suspensions and absences, centre-back Charlie Comyn-Platt came off at half time with a groin strain, leaving ECU with a number of reserve players, but Coach Dale McCulloch thought they were outstanding. “Having a lot of younger guys in the squad, it was never going to be as fierce as normal derbies,” he said.

“I thought they stood strong for a good part of the game and they’ll take a lot away from playing against seniors in a rivalry round. We’ve been pretty unlucky all year with squad numbers, but this has been the worst so far.”

The young ECU side started the game well and were ahead on 11 minutes. Bayley Montgomery slid in to finish Joe Smith’s low cross from close-range. But their lead didn’t last long and eight minutes later Sorrento levelled. Jack Eades’ free kick picked out Kilkelly, who headed home at the back post. Both sides pressed and James Morgan and Andy Banks kept their sides in the game and it was all level at the break.

The home side lost experienced defender Charlie Comyn-Platt at the break, and he was replaced by Ben Wantee, and they had to rearrange the back line. Sorrento began to take control and Banks was again in fine form. The veteran keeper, who retiring last season, has returned to replace the suspended Jamie Serra, saved well to deny Jack Salter, and moments later Thomas Boss’ cross picked out Salter again, but this time his half-volley flashed inches past the post.

But on 75 minutes Sorrento’s pressure was rewarded with the lead. This time Salter was the provider, his pass picked out Brad McDonald on the edge of the penalty area, and his shot flew past Banks. The ECU custodian was keeping his side in the game with a couple of good saves, but there was little he could do when Sorrento added a third three minutes later. Boss made space down the left, and his cross was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Hirrell.
