A goal four minutes from time from striker Tommy Amphlett has earned ECU Joondalup a point, after a 2-2 draw with Balcatta at the ECU Sports Stadium.

The speedy striker had given the home side the lead on the half hour, but Alex Caniglia levelled early in the second half. It looked like Balcatta had won it when Shazalee Ramlee scored with seven minutes remaining, but Amphlett had other ideas to earn a point. “We deserved something from the game, and dominated the first half but failed to convert our chances,” ECU Joondalup Coach Dale McCulloch said. “We gave a way a sloppy goal just after half time and we looked down and out when they scored their second, but we kept fighting and got a point in the end.”

The home side forced four corners early and had Balcatta on the back foot, and Joe Smith and Andy Higgins were causing problems. On 18 minutes Higgins whipped in a great corner, and Jon Stynes headed wide from six-yards. Moments later a superb through ball from Smith found Danny Dixon racing down the left, he cut the ball back to Amphlett who fired just over the top.

Joondalup were well on top and Clint Davies had to be alert to save Amphlett’s low drive from the edge of the penalty area moments later. But on 28 minutes the home sides’ pressure was rewarded with the lead. Amphlett picked the ball up in the middle of the park, and ran at the Balcatta defence before unleashing an unstoppable shot from 25-yards, giving Davies no chance.

With Coach Ramon Falzon’s half time address still ringing in their ears Balcatta opened the second half well and were level two minutes in. Adam Tong played the ball out to Paddy Quinn on the right, he whipped in a cross to the back post and Caniglia headed home. Both sides had chances as the game opened up, Stynes fired wide on the hour, before Gustavo Catarcione fired wide moments later.

But with seven minutes remaining Balcatta hit the front. Ramlee picked the ball, and he wasn’t closed down and his long-range shot flew into the corner of the net giving Jamie Serra no chance. It looked like the points were heading south, but Amphlett had other ideas and he levelled three minutes later. The midfielder found space on the edge of the penalty area, and finished with aplomb. ECU almost won it in the third minute of stoppage time, Dixon latched onto a cross at the far post which was well saved Davies, but at the final whistle both sides shared the spoils.
