Townsend goal in vain as Lions prevail

Stirling Lions climbed above ECU Joondalup on the National Premier Leagues WA table after producing a stirring fight back to claim a 3-1 win at Macedonia Park.

Ryan Townsend gave ECu the lead on the half hour, but a Howard Neighbour brace and another to David Micevski gave all three points to the Lions.

“We played well in the first half and could have scored a couple more, but to concede a goal on the stroke of half time was disappointing,” Coach Dale McCulloch said.

“We were asleep just half time and were punished twice, but the lads stuck at it and fought the game out well and with a little more luck we could have pegged it back, but it wasn’t to be.”

The home side lost defender Michael De Lima after only 12 minutes, and ECU took advantage, and went close to the opener. First Jon Higgins’ free kick crashed off the crossbar, before new signing Stuart Montgomery and Tommy Amphlett were denied by Lions keeper Aleks Vrteski. But on 28 minutes they found the opener, Amplett’s corner picked out Townsend who headed home bravely from close-range.

The Lions were struggling and Danny Dixon was given far too much space in the middle of the park and his shot on the run whistled inches over the bar. But on the stroke of half time the hosts levelled. Jack Salter and Hayden Doyle combined to send Neighbour in on goal and he finished well past Andy Banks.

Whatever coach Gary Williams said at half time worked as the Lions doubled their advantage in the opening minute, David Micevski firing home from 10-yards, after good lead up play from Daniel Micevski.

Then sixty seconds later they made it 3-1, Neighbour finishing clinically past Banks. Both sides had chances as the game opened up, Banks saved well from Daniel Micevski and Dean Evans, while Montgomery headed inches over from Dixon’s teasing cross, but at the final whistle it was Stirling celebrating the victory.
