ECU too good for Inglewood

ECU Joondalup ended Inglewood United forgettable week, by handing them a 5-2 thrashing at the ECU Football Arena.

United, who parted company with Coach Graham Normanton in the week, were ahead just after half time, but Joondalup put them to the sword late in the match. ECU Coach Dale McCulloch felt his team had been unlucky in the last few weeks and deserved more but pointed to a marked improvement from the first round against the same top four sides. “Things are definitely improving and we’re looking to continue this form and put in a strong finish to the season,” he said. “Today, the guys just backed each other and you can see what happens when your Tommy’s and Monty’s and Fossie’s are in form and they turn it on.”

The home side were ahead after only 11 minutes, David Foster pouncing on a mistake from Ryan Clarke, and firing low past Luke Martino. Clarke made amends for his error to equaliser on the half hour. The visitors were ahead just three minutes into the second half, Jason Colli’s deep cross found Abdul Sesay, who chipped the ball over Joondalup keeper Andy Banks. Joondalup were struggling to break down a resolute United defence, but on 70 minutes they did, to level. Stuart Montgomery’s snap shot crashed off the bar, but bounce behind the line and the goal was awarded, and Carl Rodgers smacked the rebound home just in case.

The home side were a head five minutes later, Andy Higgins sending Tommy Amphlett clear and the former Perth Glory midfielder finished clinically. Joe Smith added a fourth on 82 minutes, bundling Montgomery’s cross over line, and Inglewood skipper Greg Sharland was then sent off for after having words with the referee, has he thought Martino had been fouled. Amphlett added his second in stoppage time, running clear from another Andy Higgins through ball to give Joondalup their biggest win of the season.
