ECU Joondalup are back in the winner’s circle in the league after a 3-0 win against Armadale at Alfred Skeet Oval. A double from Tommy Amphlett and another to new signing Danny Dixon sealed the first win in five games for Dale McCulloch’s side.

Skipper Jon Higgins said ECU struggled during parts of the match but was content to have not leaked any goals. “We were flat after half time and they came at us with a really good 20-minute period where they could have scored a couple,” he said.

“It was good to have a clean sheet because we normally have to score four goals to win.

“We are working on the defence but we have some really good attacking players that can produce magic, which really gives us an edge.”

It was a perfect start for the visitors and they were a head on five minutes. Jon Higgins picked out Amphlett on the left, the former Perth Glory midfielder cut inside his marker and drilled the ball into the top corner from long-range.

Joondalup suffered a blow five minutes later when Central defender Charlie Comyn-Platt limped off with a knee injury; he was replaced by Ryan McDarby.

The home side struggled to break down a Joondalup defence well led by McDarby and Ryan Lowry, and didn’t have a shot in the first half.

Dixon fired wide on the half hour for Joondalup, after good work from Jake Benson-Cooper, before Jon Higgins; free kick flashed inches past the post moments later.

The visitors continued to press after the break, and went close to adding to their lead on the hour. Ryan Lowry’s shot was cleared off the line, before Amphlett’s volley from close-range was again cleared of the line.

But with Armadale pushing men forward they were caught out again in the 90th minute. Dixon, who has signed from Bayswater City last week, picked the ball up on the half way line, cut inside his marker and fired low past Matthew Gould from the edge of the penalty area.

The points were made safe in the third minute of stoppage time, with another stunning long-range strike from Amphlett, which flew into the top corner giving Gould no chance.
