Stirling Lions moved into the quarter-final of the state league cup after a hard fought 4-2 win against ECU Joondalup at Macedonia Park.

Moses Kalau gave the hosts the lead early, before Gareth McGlynn and Jon Stynes both scored doubles for their respective sides. The home side then lost Andy Brown to a red card, but Joondalup couldn’t make their one man advantage count and Anthony Lyons scored the fourth with the last kick of the game. “A win is all important in the cup as you only get one opportunity. It wasn’t the prettiest game we have played but it keeps our run and momentum going,” said Stirling assistant Coach Gary Williams.

It was a perfect start for the home side and they were ahead after only two minutes. Kalau won possession of Joondalup defender Scott Blackmore, and the young midfielder then rounded Andy Banks and fired home. Kalau then almost doubled their lead on 10 minutes; his free kick was tipped onto the post by Banks, and away to safety. The visitors rallied and were level on 17 minutes. Jon Higgins’ corner caused problems in the penalty area and Stynes fired home from close range.

The Lions pressed forward and regained the lead eight minutes later. McGlynn slide it low past Banks after Rory Grants flick. But back came Joondalup, and on 36 minutes another in-swinging Jon Higgins corner was fumbled by Aleks Vrteski and Stynes pounced to fire home. Their joy was short lived as the hosts regained the lead sixty seconds later. Matt Harold’s deep cross picked out who headed home at the back post. Joondalup almost levelled again before half time, Joe Smith’s cross found Tony Taylor, but his header was cleared off the line.

Both sides pressed in the second half with a number of half chances, but both defences were on top, but in the last minute of play Stirling went down to ten men. Tanner Selyer burst clear and was brought down by Andy Brown, and referee David Bruce showed the defender a straight red card. But from the resulting free kick Jon Higgins curling effort was over the top. But with Joondalup pushing men forward they were caught out in stoppage time.

Lyons pounced on a defensive mistake to go one-on-one with Banks, the keeper saved his first shot but Lyons scored from the rebound. Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro was left disappointed with the outcome. “It was disappointing result again, after a decent performance. We cannot afford to keep giving teams one or two goal starts,” said Todaro. “We are showing courage and tenacity to keep fighting back from these positions, but we need to be less generous to our opponents and make them earn the goals they score against us. “
