Sorrento take out the local derby

A Jamie Harnwell header in the first half proved the difference, as Sorrento beat ECU Joondalup in the northern derby at the Edith Cowen University Campus. “I was extremely disappointed with certain aspects of our game that have in recent weeks been our strength. It was a very dour affair and although we didn’t play particularly well. I’m also disappointed that we lost to a goal from a set piece that we had spoken about before the game,” Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro said.

The home side should have opened the scoring after only seven minutes. A poor header by former Joondalup defender Daryl Platten, back to his keeper Curtis Aspden, sent Tony Taylor racing in on goal, but Jamie Harnwell spotted the danger and got back with a timely tackle to spare Platten’s blushes. Sorrento lifted and David Price’s half volley from the edge of the penalty area whistled wide of the target, but on 24 minutes they hit the front. Gavin Knights’ free kick picked out the unmarked Harnwell at the back post and he headed home past a helpless Andy Banks.

The big defender should have added his second on the half hour. Todd Harnwell made space and sent a great ball into the box, but Jamie (Harnwell), fired wide, when it looked easier to score. Knight had the ball in the net moments later, but his celebration was short lived as the flag was up for offside. Both sides had chances late in the half, Ryan Pearson shot crashed off the post, while Jon Higgins’ free kick was tipped over by Aspden, but the Gulls led at the break.

The home side began the second half well, but struggled in the final third and found it hard to break down a resolute Sorrento defence. The best chances fell to Sorrento and Jamie Harnwell saw his header cleared off the line late on. But it was his goal that won the game and kept Sorrento in touch with leaders Bayswater, and the former Perth Glory defender was happy to get on the scoresheet in a rare start this season for the Gulls. “I was pretty pleased – I’ve been kicking my heels on the side for the season and the team’s been doing well, so when you get the chance you have got to make the most of it,” Harnwell told footballwest.com.au. “I got one and probably should have had a couple more, but we got the three points and that’s the most important thing.”
