A first-half brace by striker Tanner Selyer was enough to get ECU Joondalup over the line in their opening Group E Night Series encounter against First Division side Shamrock Rovers on Sunday evening.

The New Zealander latched onto a Dejan Spasoski through ball to grab his first on 20 minutes, and then he doubled his side’s lead eight minutes later courtesy of a defensive mix up.

Shamrock struggled to carve out any clear chances for the rest of the match giving ECU Joondalup an easy first up win. “It was a very good team performance to start off the night series,” said ECU Coach Salv Todaro.

“I was pleased with the way the players are adapting to the structure and formation that we are trying to implement, and I thought it was an impressive first team debut from Dejan Spaseski.”

The match started brightly and it was in the first minute of play that Shamrock almost had the game’s opener. Ciaran Byrne floated into the box to receive a ball from the left. From an acute angle he tried his luck against the advancing Andy Banks. His lob only just sailed over the top of the crossbar and Joondalup breathed collective sighs of relief.

Shamrock’s good early intentions were undone however; when Selyer was allowed to beat the off side trap and collect a neat pass from Spasovski, and easily side footed past Rovers’ custodian Justin Scaruacci to give ECU the lead.

It was a misguided header from Shamrock’s defence that led to Selyer’s and Joondalup’s second.

Looking to head back to safety, Rovers defender Mark O’Brien seemed to put too much power in his header, which fortuitously fell right into the path of Selyer at the edge of the box and he made no mistake burying  his shot into the bottom left corner, giving Scaruacci little chance.

Rovers looked to hit back five minutes after the break when a long sweeping ball found an unmarked Corbett deep in the opposition’s box.  However, his chest down was heavy and he ran out of room to get any meaningful effort past Banks. The remainder of the half was a midfield tussle with few chances in front of goal. Both sides looked as though they were keen to shake off the off-season cobwebs and will be better for their next encounter.
