Lloyd spoils the party for McCulloch

They had to do it the hard way after Euen Grant was sent off mid-way through the second half but Joondalup couldn’t break down a Cockburn defence with former Celtic keeper Nick Feely making his debut for the club.  “It was always going to be hard with a man sent off, so all testament to them for digging deep. We are fit enough, but you just have to adapt,” Cockburn City Coach Marc Anthony said. “They’re a good side, it was a very dangerous game for us; one I was worried about.”

The visitors had a great start and were ahead on seven minutes. After a good build up Lloyd lost his marker in the penalty area and fired low past Andy Banks. The home looked to hit back and midway through the half good approach work from Tommy Amphlett and Taner Selyer, sent the former Perth Glory midfielder in on goal, but his shot was well held by Feely. Chances were few and far between for the rest of the half and the visitors went in at the break one too the good.

After half time the home side pressed but, they suffered a blow on the hour when defender Ryan Lowry limped off, and taken to hospital with a suspected fractured ankle. Then on 68 minutes Cockburn were reduced to ten men when Grant received his second yellow card from referee Trent Fleskenss and was sent off. The introduction of Joe Knowles had given the home side a lift. He fired just wide of the target on 70 minutes and five minutes later saw his shot was well saved by Feely. With Joondalup pushing men forward they nearly conceded another late on, Harry O’Brien hitting the crossbar from point blank range.
