Joondalup let it slip

Stirling Lions recovered from conceding two early goals to run out 4-2 winners over ECU Joondalup at the Edith Cowan University campus.

It looked like being a good day for the home side after Tony Taylor and Andy Higgins put them two-up inside 20 minutes, however, quick goals from Gareth McGlynn and Dean Evans brought the sides level before Matt Harold and Rory Grant settled things after the turnaround.

Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro could not hide his disappointment after watching his side thrown away a two-goal cushion. “We started off like a house on fire and should have finished the half with at least a couple more goals. Stirling did well to bring it back to 2-2 before half-time (but) we had a claim for a couple of penalties and the disallowed goal was harsh,” he said. “Vrteski has made three or four great saves in the second half while, aside from their two goals, our keeper’s only touched it once. We need to expand on our passages of passing and high-pressure play, because when it comes off other teams can’t handle us.”

The day got off to a terrific start for the home team, Taylor’s vicious shot through a crowded 18-yard box giving Aleks Vrteski no chance after only 3 minutes. That lead was doubled fifteen minutes later courtesy of a tidy exchange that Higgins finished by sliding past the advancing goalkeeper. Stirling then turned the game on its head with a couple of rapid fire goals, Grant teeing up McGlynn to curl inside the far post from 16-metres. McGlynn was provider two minutes later by squaring to Evans whose shot into the top corner had ‘keeper Andy Banks motionless. The hosts did get the ball in the net again just before the break but an offside flag discounted Tanner Selyer’s deflected effort.

Next it was Stirling’s turn to be denied a goal for offside with Scott Bulloch netting early in the second stanza. With the game in the balance, the teams traded attacks with Joondalup fashioning the better openings but unable to get the better of Vrteski. So it was against the run of play that Stirling went ahead on 62 minutes, Harrold going inside the 18-yard box after exchanging passes with Grant to apply an exquisite curling finish across the ‘keeper and inside the far post. The game was made safe in the 77th minute when Grant stooped at the far post to head in Arnold’s low, hard centre from the left.

“I’m only happy when we’re competing all over the pitch and after the first 20 minutes we did that,” said Stirling coach Doug Hesketh. “Fair play to the boys, they brought it back through their own persistence and hard work and over the course of the game I felt we thoroughly deserved the win.”
