Joondalup end Inglewood’s Finals hopes

Inglewood United missed out of the top five finals after they drew 3-3 with ECU Joondalup at Intiga Stadium.

David Perich and Andrija Jukic gave the home side a two goal lead, before Joondalup skipper Jon Higgins pulled one back on the stroke of half time. Jukic made it 3-1 early in the second half, but goals Charlie Comyn-Platt (right) and teenager midfielder Joe Knowles gave Joondalup a share of the spoils. “I’m chuffed that we haven’t been beaten in the last seven games,” said Joondalup Coach Dale McCulloch. “I wouldn’t say it’s a season to forget because we’ve played very well for the past seven, games so I think we’ll be able to build on that next year.”

The home opened the game brightly and opened the scoring on 19 minutes. Alex Caniglia carried the ball from inside his own half and fed the overlapping Jason Colli, whose cross to the back post found the unmarked Perich, who fired home from five meters.  Eight minutes later the home side doubled their lead.  Jukic managed to squeeze the ball in at the near post from just inside the penalty area. How was it set up?? On the stroke of half time, Joondalup then gave themselves a lifeline. Higgins shot on the turn flash past Luke Martino to give the visitors hope at the break.

That hope was given a jolt four minutes into the second half when Inglewood made it 3-1.  ? found space in the penalty area, and his shot was well saved by Andy Banks, but the Jukic was quickest to react to fire home from close-range. McCulloch then made a tactical change and they started to create more chances and grow in confidence. Their efforts were rewarded in the 66th minute when Comyn-Platt bundled the ball in from on the line after Inglewood failed to clear their lines from a Jon Higgins free kick.

Joondalup pushed forward looking for the equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded with four minutes remaining. Jon Higgins’ corner was only cleared as far as Knowles on the edge of the penalty area, and the young midfielder fired home low past Martino.  The Inglewood custodian then made a fine save to deny Tommy Amphlett and Jason Colli then blocked the follow up shot from Knowles.
