Joondalup continue improvement

ECU Joondalup made it four games without defeat after a hard fought 2-0 win against Armadale at the Edith Cowen University Campus.

Second half goals to Jon Higgins and Tommy Amphlett were enough for Dale McCulloch’s side, but it could have been better if not for Armadale keeper Cyril Sharrock, who produced some great saves to deny them. “After a scrappy first half on our part we knew we needed to change tact and pressure Armadale higher up the pitch,” said McCulloch. “I brought on young Joe Knowles to work their back four hard and it has paid dividends, which was pleasing.”

The visitors began brightly and went close early after a neat one two in the middle of the park between Louie Bake and Mitch Castrilli, sent the latter in on goal, but with the goal at his mercy he shot straight at Joondalup custodian Andy Banks. The home side, who were looking for back-to-back home wins for the first time this season, were struggling to break down a tight Armadale defence, with former Joondalup defender Billy Quinncroft in good form, but that all changed, after the break.

Right from the restart the home side began to get on top and five minutes in Amphlett’s powerful shot from the edge of the penalty was superbly saved one-handed by Sharrock. The introduction of 17-year-old Knowles gave the home side more dominance and on 64 minutes they were rewarded with the lead. David Caine picked out Jon Higgins, who wasn’t closed down on the edge of the penalty area and his sweetly struck shot flashed low past Sharrock. It was nearly 2-0 five minutes later, Knowles played in Amphlett who shot from five meters was well saved by Sharrock, and the Armadale custodian reacted superbly to deny Knowles from the follow up.

The visitors were restricted to long-range shot’s but their best chance fell to substitute Rhys Loxley on 75 minutes. He cut in from the left, but his low cross just evaded Lance Louvie at the back post. Joondalup couldn’t find a second and Amphlett volleyed wide from a Tommy Jones cross moments later. Joondalup were dominating and Jones’ close-range shot flashed wide of the target before Knowles shot from six meters drifted harmlessly wide. But Joondalup pressure finally paid off in the final minute. Joe Smith found Knowles down the flank and after some neat foot work the youngster sent Amphlett racing clear, and the former Perth Glory midfielder made no mistake from eight meters.
