Heagney at the double for Floreat

A double from Floreat Athena striker David Heagney has given them a hard fought 2-1 win against ECU Joondalup at the Edith Cowen University Campus.

Joondalup hit back in the second half with Jon Higgins scoring from a free kick with twelve minutes remaining but Floreat hung on for the points. ECU coach Dale McCulloch was delighted with his side’s second half performance and despite the result believes they are heading in the right direction.  “We played really well in the second half and were disappointed not to have got the equaliser, but that’s football, but there were positives out there today and we look forward to our next challenge at Bayswater next week.” said McCulloch.

It was a tight opening and the first chance fell to the home side on eight minutes, Charlie Comyn-Platt’s header at the back post was saved Floreat keeper Brad Eiffe. But two minutes later, and in their first attack, the visitors took the lead. A long diagonal ball by Callum Fransz sent Heagney racing down the right, and he curled his shot up and over Andy Banks and into the net. It got worse for the home side 12 minutes later when Heagney added his second, the striker firing home after good work from Benny Kouadio on the left.

After the break Joondalup coach Dale McCulloch made a double change on 53 minutes, bringing on strikers Genaveo Human and Tanner Selyer and the home side began to take the upper hand. On the hour a Comyn-Platt free kick picked out Tanner, but his shot was deflected wide by Fransz.  From the resulting corner Ryan Townsend headed inches wide of the target. Floreat were on the back foot, but they almost added a third on 70 minutes. A short corner from Heagney to Cisco Jorquera caught Joondalup napping, but his shot from the edge of the penalty area crashed off the crossbar and away to safety.

But on 78 minutes the home side were back in the game. Jon Higgins’ free kick from wide on the right was curled into the top corner, and Joondalup were back in the game.  Joondalup continued to press and substitute Scott Blackmore headed inches wide from Comyn-Platt’s free kick four minutes later. With Joondalup pushing men forward Heagney had the chance to kill off the game and score his hat-trick, after he was sent clear by Ludovic Boi in stoppage time, but his low shot flashed inches past the far post.  “It was pity we couldn’t continue our first half effort in the second. I warned the boys at half time not to be complacent and go out in the second half the same, but something went wrong in the second half which was disappointing,” explained Floreat Coach Chris Barbas.
