ECU too strong for NTC

ECU Joondalup stepped into the winners circle for this first time in over a month with a resounding 4-2 defeat of the National Training Centre.

Tommy Amphlett (Right) played the starring role by having a hand in all four of the host’s goals scored by Tony Taylor (2), Joe Smith and John Monterosso. “They’ve worked their socks off with and without the ball,” Coach Salv Todaro told footballwest.com.au. “I’ve kept saying we need to get consistency in our game and we’ve finally had it over 90 minutes and got the rewards.”

The NTC were on the defensive from early with Amphlett the instigator behind a series of Joondalup raids. It took only 13 minutes for that positive approach to reap dividends with Taylor converting from the penalty spot after a defender used his hands to halt Amphlett’s centring ball.

Joondalup’s lead was increased just three minutes later, Amphlett again the provider with an inviting cross which headed powerfully into the top corner. Luck was certainly on the NTC’s side in the 32nd minute when Borbor Sambindi cross was caught by the wind and drifted over goalkeeper Andy Banks, who had been caught by surprise.

Monterosso, who replaced an injury Tanner Selyer in the first half, added himself to the scoresheet after 67 minutes but tucking in at close-range after ‘keeper Jordan Franken denied Amphlett in a one-on-one situation.

A defensive mix-up allowed the NTC to pull a goal back two minutes later with Darcy Cosgrove nipping in between Banks and Shaun Timmins to put away what was otherwise a fairly innocuous ball in by Sambindi. The result was put beyond doubt in the 72nd minute when Storm Roux’s heavy touch was punished by Taylor’s fine first time finish to the left of Franken.

However, Todaro indicated it was his side that needed to work on being tighter in defence.

“Both of the goals conceded were very soft. Particularly concerning for me was the lack of concentration after scoring our third which lead to their quick retort,” he said.

“We’ve had three good halves of football in a row now we need to keep momentum by working hard in training and aim for a decent run of results”.
