Bunbury win basement battle

Bunbury Forum Force won for only the second time this season with a hard fought 2-1 win against ECU Joondalup at the Edith Cowen University Campus.

Liam Hutchinson and Ryan Francis put them 2-0 up in the first half, and Joondalup skipper Dale McCulloch was then sent off. Tony Taylor pulled one back for the host in the second half, but Bunbury left with the points. “It was a professional performance from a set of lads who have tried to keep believing and digging in. The key now, moving forward, is that they bring that level consistently,” Bunbury coach Matt Holland told footballwest.com.au.  “The lads will enjoy today’s result and hopefully they’ll realise that that’s the minimum requirement and we can kick on from here.”

The host began brightly, as they looked to end a four game losing streak, but for all their possession they never created any chances of note. The visitors went close on 20 minutes, Jamie Tandy raced into the area, rounded Andy Banks, but his shot was deflected wide. From the resulting corner Bunbury took the lead, Banks was adjudged to have fouled Aaron Brittain and referee Michal Jasinski pointed straight to the spot. Hutchinson stepped up to fire home the penalty to give them the lead.

Joondalup continued to struggle in the final third, much to the frustration of their supporters, and six minutes later Bunbury doubled their lead. Francis was given far too much space in the middle of the park and his stunning 20-meter strike flew into the top corner of the net giving Banks no chance. Joondalup hopes suffered another blow two minutes later when they were reduced to ten men. McCulloch and Hutchinson were involved in an altercation, the Joondalup skipper raised his hands and the referee showed him a straight red card.

After the break the home side continued to battle and were rewarded on 56 minutes. Joe Smith’s in-swinging free kick picked out Taylor who headed past Ryan Montgomery, who was blocked by one of his own players. Joondalup pressed for the equaliser and Taylor raced though from Jon Stynes though ball late, but Hutchinson’s last ditch tackle denied him. There was confusion late when the referee showed a red card to Hutchinson, believing it was his second yellow. But after discussion he allowed the defender to stay on the pitch.
