ECU Joondalup have fought out a scoreless draw against Balcatta in Saturday’s week 18 All Flags Premier League game at Grindleford Reserve.

ECU coach Dale McCulloch felt his side had the upper hand in the opening stages and was disappointed they could not capitalise on a host of chances created from corners and set pieces.

Tommy Amphlett caused the home side problems throughout the game with his menacing pace and pin point deliveries linking up well with team mate Andy Higgins down the left flank, and the Coach was pleased with their performance. “I was pleased with the chemistry of Tommy (Amphlett) and Andy (Higgins),” McCulloch said. “It’s something we’ve been working on in training this week so it’s always nice to see it come off in a game.”

Balcatta enjoyed the better of first half chances with Kris Gate and Ashley Rosindale featuring more often than not. Gate twice put Rosindale in behind the defence but on both occasions was thwarted by goalkeeper Andy Banks. The majority of Joondalup’s attacks stemmed from the left where Andy Higgins and Tommy Amphlett were linking to terrific effect, however, Tanner Selyer was unable to apply the finish the visitors desired. At the opposite Patrick Sara teed-up Rosindale whose shot flashed over Banks only to crashed into the crossbar.

Tensions remained on edge throughout the second half with both teams going for the win. Matt Brooks should have done better than head wide of an open goal from 5-metre after being found by Gate’s in-swinging a corner. Amphlett fashioned a great opening at the other end but scooped the shot high, and a spectacular overhead by substitute Tommy Jones flashed just past the junction of crossbar and post. It looked as though Gate had found a way through in the final minute but his low drive on the end of a mazy run cannoned back off the upright.

“We’re not in contention for top five so now all we’re looking at is putting in good performances and letting some of the younger lads gain some experience” Balcatta coach Saul Contera said.

“I’d like to point out today we’ve had eight first team players missing, two debuts and five reserve players, so I have to be pleased with a point.”
