Perth back on top after win at ECU

Posted on May 29, 2012 in 'Reports'

Perth Soccer Club moved back to the top of the table after a 2-1 win against ECU Joondalup at the Edith Cowen University Arena. The visitors skipper David Onoforo and Dom De Felice gave Perth a two goal lead, while Joondalup scored a late consolation goal thanks to a Craig Simpson own goal, but still remain bottom of the table.

It was the home side who started brightly, with Tanner Selyer and David Foster causing problems early and after some neat approach work between the Joondalup strikers, Foster’s goalbound shot was blocked by Shaun Kilkelly. Then two minutes later Adam Bachiller had to be alert to prevent Foster from latching onto a clever Scott Bushby through ball. Perth awoke from their slumber and Bachiller’s inch perfect pass sent Onoforo in on goal, his shot beat Andy Banks but the post came to the rescue of the Joondalup custodian. Then on 20 minutes Onoforo was the provider this times sending Bachiller in on goal, the defender finished past Banks, but the flag as up for offside.

Joondalup were desperate to open their account at home and went close two minutes later. A long clearance found Selyer, who outpaced Kilkelly but his low shot was superbly tipped around the post by Alex Dunn.

The visitors continued to look dangerous on the break and Daniel Neiderberger fired wide when well placed on 40 minutes, but three minutes later they had the lead. Isaia found space down the right and his pin-point cross found Onoforo who fired home at the back post.

The home side started the second half well Selyer picking out Busby on six minutes, but the midfielder blazed high over the top, while Tommy Jones cross was mis-judged by Foster and the chance was gone. The striker almost made amends for the miss moments later, his long-range shot bounced just in front of Dunn but he managed to hold on to the ball with Selyer racing in for any spillage.

But with Joondalup chasing the game it was Perth who added a second goal on 69 minutes. Antonio Naglieri played a perfectly weighted ball into De Felice who volleyed home.  The visitors should have extended their lead three minutes later when Isaia played in Onoforo, but the striker blazed wide. Joondalup continue to push forward and on 83 minute Dale McCulloch’s free-kick was flicked on to Foster by Scott Blackmore and somehow Dunn kept out Foster’s effort at point blank range. They had a late goal gifted to them when Simpson looped a back pass over the head of Dunn, but it was too little too late for the home side.
