Knights Taught a lesson at ECU

ECU Joondalup returned to the winners circle with a morale boasting 5-1 win against Western Knights at The Edith Cowen University Campus.

David Foster scored twice for the home side, but the damage was done in the first half when Joondalup raced to a 4-1 lead, with goals from Matt Italiano, Foster, Tommy Jones and Scott Bushby. Foster added his second four minutes into the second half, while the Knights’ consolation came from Ryan Shackleton. “The result today has been coming for the last couple of weeks, and it’s just reward for all the hard work the boys have been putting in at training,” said ECU Joondalup Coach Todaro.

“I’m also extremely happy for the hard working committee members who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes all year, not only on the football side but ensuring that our new clubrooms will be ready – It’s been a good day all round.”

Joondalup, who had not won in the league since round three, went close early; Shaun Timmins’ cross looped up over Knights keeper Kevin Miller, but luckily for the Knights custodian the crossbar came to his rescue. The Knights also threatened and after Thomas Gasser found space on the edge of the penalty area his curling shot was well saved by Andy Banks. It was the home side that struck the first blow on 17 minutes, Italiano firing home from seven metres, after great approach work from Tommy Amphlett. The home fans only had to wait two more minutes to double their advantage, Jones squaring to Foster to side foot past Miller.

The Knights looked to hit back immediately but Rory Grant couldn’t test Banks, when he headed over from David Annall’s flick-on. Joondalup were playing some great football and they were rewarded again on 38 minutes. Defender Cameron Burgess delivered an inviting cross from the left and Jones headed into the bottom corner. There was time for another before half time, as Foster found Bushby, and the former Knights midfielder slotted home a fourth before half time, to the joy of the home faithful.

It didn’t look as though it was getting any better for the Knights after the break, when a mix up in defence after only five minutes allowed Foster to nip in and fire a 22-metre volley that flew over Millers head. Joondalup had let a lead slip by last week at Balcatta, and they may have felt slightly concerned as Shackleton’s pulled one back for the Knights on 53 minutes. The visitors had chances to cut the margin even more, but Jackson Turner and Shackleton missed late chances, while Italiano could have added a sixth in stoppage time, but the midfielder fired wide after beating the offside trap, but it didn’t matter as the Joondalup side one for the first time under their new coach.
