Joondalup stuns Perth

ECU Joondalup have all but secured their Premier League survival after a stunning 5-3 win against Perth Soccer Club at Dorrien Gardens. Tanner Selyer and Scott Blackmore scored early for the visitors before Shaun Kilkelly pulled one back before the break. But in the second half a John Higgins brace and a Mike Adamcewicz strike secured the win, with Daniel Niederberger and Adam Bachiller on target for Perth. “I thought the boys played really, really well, it was hard but we had a game plan and we stuck to it. We are still playing for our season, we have to keep winning and it is in our hands,” Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro said.

Both sides were desperate for the win at either ends of the table, but it was the visitors who opened the brighter and were ahead on 16 minutes, Tanner Selyer firing home after good work from Higgins.  Joondalup continued to take the game to Perth and Alex Dunn had to be alert to save from Matt Italiano ten minutes later. But just past the half hour they did double their lead, Blackmore heading home Higgins’ corner. The natives were getting restless in the stands but moments later Perth was back in the game. Niederberger’s shot beat Andy Banks but crashed off the post, and Kilkelly was well placed to fire home from close-range.

Perth made a double change at the break bringing on David Onoforo and Robbie Sciascia, and they began to get on top. But against the run of play Joondalup increased their lead. Higgins picked the ball up in the middle of the park, drifted past two Perth defenders before firing home from 25-meters. But sixty seconds later the home side were back in the game, Niederberger tapping home Sciascia’s corner to reduce the margin, and on 63 minutes they were level, Bachiller firing home.

It was game on as both sides stepped up the tempo and moments later Niederberger was sent clear after referee Mathew Cheeseman played a good advantage, after Onoforo was brought down, but the striker fired over the top. Tommy Amphlett then tried his luck from long-range on 80 minutes for Joondalup, but he failed to find the target, but three minutes they were in front.

Substitute Adamcewicz, who had only been on the pitch for four minutes, raced clear after a one-two with John Thornley and finished low past Dunn. Perth was irate that a foul in the lead up to the goal was overlooked, but the goal stood. The icing was put on the cake for the visitors in stoppage-time, Higgins’ bullet like free kick wrapping up the points, sparking celebrations amongst the Joondalup faithful.
