Joondalup safe after win over Balcatta

Posted on September 7, 2012 in 'Reports'

A goal in each half has secured ECU Joondalup their All Flags Premier Division survival, after a 2-0 win against Balcatta at the Edith Cowen University Campus. John Higgins put them in front just before half time and David Foster added a second eight minutes into the second half.

The game was vital for both sides at kick off; Balcatta needed the points to keep their top five chances alive, while Joondalup needed them at the other end of the table.

The home side made just the one change to the side that beat Perth in the last round with Tommy Jones coming into the side with Mark Tebbutt dropping to the bench. Balcatta made two changes to the side that lost against Bayswater City with Boima Karpeh and Callum Roberts coming into the line-up, John Migas was out injured, while Daniel Micevski dropped to the bench.

It was a great day for football and the home side began the game well, and had the first opportunity on six minutes. Tommy Amphlett was sent down the right by Foster; his cross was headed back by Selyer into the path of Higgins, whose shot from the edge of the penalty area crashed off the post and away to safety.

Then six minutes later they went close again. Selyer was the provider again; he slipped the ball through for Foster, who beat keeper Bobson Koroma to the ball but his shot was cleared off the line Chris Thackray.

Balcatta settled, and went close to the opener on the quarter hour. Roberts’ through ball sent David Micevski racing clear, but Andy Banks was out bravely to save at the midfielder’s feet. Moments later David Micevski’s corner fell to Karpah, whose shot on the turn whistled inches over the bar.

The home side were given a perfect opportunity to take the lead on 35 minutes, when referee Hugh Best awarded a penalty when Julian Madaschi pushed Dale McCulloch in the box. Foster stepped up, but his powerful spot kick was well saved by Koroma low to his right.

But with four minutes to go to the break, the home side deservedly took the lead. Banks’ clearance picked out Selyer, the striker controlled the ball superbly before playing in Higgins, who picked his spot and fired low past Koroma from 18-yards, to send Joondalup in front at the break.

Balcatta went close to the equaliser in the opening minute of the second half; David Micevski’s corner from the right was heading inches over by Shane Nunes. But on 53 minutes it was the home side that doubled their lead.  Rob Draper and Matt Italiano combined to send Selyer clear, he in turn played Foster in on goal and the striker finished with aplomb past Koroma.

Joondalup continued to dominate and Koroma had to be alert to deny Italiano on the hour, while Amphlett’s shot on the run was only inches wide.

Balcatta’s season was on the line and they began to get back into the game and moments later David Micevski’s shot from the edge of the penalty area was well saved by Banks. Then on 66 minutes Moe Atak’s shot from 20-yards crashed off the crossbar, bounced on the line and rebounded into the grateful arms of the Joondalup custodian.

With Balcatta pushing players forward they were getting caught out at the back, and moments later Scott Blackmore sent Amphlett racing clear down the right. The former Perth Glory midfielder’s pin-point cross picked out Foster, whose header from 10-yards was superbly saved by Koroma.

The visitors were pressing late and on 81 minutes David Micevski sent second half substitute Veo Human in on goal, his shot from 12-yards beat Banks, but hit the post. It just wasn’t Balcatta’s day.

The home side almost made it 3-0 late, Foster playing in Selyer one-on-one with Koroma, but the Balcatta custodian stood tall and saved, but at the final whistle it was Joondalup celebrating the win and their Premier Division survival.

It was a good all-round performance from Joondalup and after the game Coach Salv Todaro was delighted. “We played really well for the whole 90 minutes today, and it’s been the same for the last three weeks, which has been really pleasing,” said Todaro.

“It was a good team performance, Tanner Selyer ran the line well for us and he gave them problems all day, and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet, while in the middle of the park I thought we dominated.”
