Inglewood too good for ECU

Inglewood too good for ECU

ECU Joondalup suffered their biggest defeat of the season, as Aleks Jovic bagged a hat-trick as Inglewood maintained the pressure on their title rivals following an emphatic 6-0 win at The ECU Arena. (By Football West Reporter Tommy Doleman)

The visitors were a class above on the day with three individual goal scorers in the opening 23 minutes, James Sammut, Jovic and Ryan Clarke, all but securing the result for Graham Normanton’s chargers by half time.

Dannie Richman was the fourth man to hit the scoresheet ten minutes into the second half, before a brace in 17 second half minutes to Jovic, which completed his treble, added the gloss to a comprehensive performance.

“Extremely disappointed would have to be understatement,” said Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro.

“We simply didn’t turn up; however, to be fair to Inglewood they played extremely well, they are by far the best team that we have played this year.”

There wasn’t a lot to shout about for the home side, who were second best throughout, despite encouraging signs in the three weeks prior where they demolished the Western Knights and fell narrowly to last season’s league winners Balcatta.

The signs were there as early as the fifth minute, as first Ryan Clarke and then James Sammut forced brilliant saves from Andy Banks.

Three minutes later the opening goal did arrive when Richman laid the ball into the path of Sammut to fire home brilliantly from the edge of the area.

Not content with the lead of a solitary goal, Inglewood sustained the pressure on ECU Joondalup’s goal to score two in two minutes, shell-shocking their opponents.

First, Caniglia tormented Burgess down the right hand side with some nifty foot work before crossing low for Jovic, who had a little bit of luck as the ball ricocheted off his knee and into the net.

Then, almost straight from the kick-off, it was three when Clarke tried his luck in the left channel and beat Banks with power and precision.

The home side finally mounted an effort of note on the half hour mark when David Foster forced Francis Soale to tip a header over the bar, but Inglewood stayed in the driving seat and saw their advantage through to the interval.

Inglewood found their attacking verve very quickly in the second half with Jack Clisby bringing the best out of Banks on more than one occasion.

It was 4-0 on 55 minutes; with Caniglia once again the architect, drifting inside and finding the perfect pass to pick out the run from midfield of Richman, who rounded the keeper to slot home.

Ten minutes later, it was five, as Jovic pounced on a defensive error in the hosts defence to fire home a crisp drive from the edge of the area.

And with seven minutes to spare, Inglewood put a forceful stamp on proceedings when Caniglia’s third assist of the game was hooked home for Jovic to complete his treble.
