Gulls fly home with the points

Second half goals from Jason Mirco and Steve McDonald earned Sorrento a 2-0 win in the northern suburbs derby against ECU Joondalup at the Edith Cowan University campus (by Football West Reporter Tommy Doleman).

Mirco’s fifth goal of the season broke the deadlock soon after the interval with McDonald opportunistically sealing victory in the closing minutes.

New ECU Coach was disappointed with the result but was happy with the performance. “I was disappointed with the result and thought that the penalty given was little harsh. Thought we had done enough to Share the points,” said Todaro.

“I was pleased with certain aspects of our game and believe there is a platform for us to be extremely competitive this year.”

The game started at a good tempo and with plenty of tough but fair challenges. Mike Aspin, whose runs down the right were a constant feature for the visiting team, forced the first real save from Andy Banks after he broke inside the 18-yard box. Both sides had opportunities with dead ball but neither Dale McCulloch nor Brodie Martin was able to get free headers on target. Scott Bushby fired high before Aspin curled over Banks’ crossbar as the teams traded attacks. The best chance of the period fell to McDonald but he volleyed high at close-range after meeting a cross by Mirco.

The stalemate was finally broken ten minutes into the second period when Mirco fired under Banks from the penalty spot after Ryan Pearson had been felled. With this Joondalup sprang into action but despite their desire for goals the closest they would come was long-range attempts by Rob Draper and Bushby which a well-positioned Curtis Aspden saved. Sorrento, however, were not yet done and McDonald headed onto the roof of the net before James Morgan was denied by Banks. The visitors conjure the second goal they craved into the 90th minute with McDonald ghosting in to convert Pearson’s cross.

“We made the most of our chances in a scrappy game and came away with the points,” commented Mirco. “We knew it was going to be a hard game, Joondalup had a new coach on board and were flying high after beating Bayswater City whereas we were coming off a big loss to Perth SC.”
