Foster makes Bayswater pay the penalty

ECU Joondalup pulled of the surprise of the round when they beat league leaders Bayswater City 1-0 at the Edith Cowen University Campus on Saturday.

In a drama filled last 10 minutes both sides had a player sent off, before David Foster, who had only been on the pitch a few minutes, converted from the penalty spot in the second minute of stoppage-time to give the home side a much need three points. “I’m extremely proud of the players and they showed great character to put in such a fabulous effort after last week’s debacle,” said Joondalup Coach Salv Todaro.

The game was vital for both sides at either end of the table and the first half was an arm wrestle with chances few and far between. The midfield battle between Dale McCulloch and Paul McCarthy was tough but it was the visitors who were on top and Joondalup keeper Andy Banks made two crucial saves to keep his side in the game, while Joondalup struggled to break down a solid Bayswater defence with John Kearney and Andy Reale outstanding. Referee Hugh Best was busy showing three yellow cards as the game looked like boiling over.

After the break it was end-to-end football as both sides looked for the opener and Joondalup went close on the hour. Mike Adamcewicz cross found Shaun Timmins in the penalty area but the ball bounce just before him and his shot went well wide when well placed.  Bayswater were dangerous on the break but with striker Gustavo Giron-Marulanda well held by Tommy Jones, they were struggling to create chances. Tommy Amphlett tried his luck from long-range, but it didn’t trouble Gianni Papalia in the Bayswater goal.  Then it was the turn of Bayswater to go close when Gustavo Catarcione was sent clear by Cisco Jorquera, but Scott Blackmore was across with a vital last ditch tackle.

With ten minutes remaining the game came to life. First on 80 minutes John Higgins was given a second yellow card by Best after he was fouled by Ross Cosgrave on the edge of the penalty area, and a melee ensued. After the dust settled Amphlett’s free kick bent around the wall and skimmed of the outside of the post. But Bayswater’s one man advantage last for all of seven minutes when Giron-Marulanda fell under a challenge in the penalty area and referee Best gave him his second yellow card for simulation. The drama didn’t end there and Amphlett was thwarted by a smart save from Papilla in the last minute and two minutes into stoppage time second half substitute Foster was bundled down by Kearney and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Foster picked himself up to score and give Joondalup a vital three points.

“It was a massive win, we have let the club down recently but today we showed the passion and commitment we are going to need to show in every game to get us out of trouble,’ said ECU defender Tommy Jones.
