A bad day at the office for ECU

It was a bad at the office last for ECU last week, and a seven-goal first half laid the foundations for Floreat Athena’s 9-1 win at Litis Stadium. (By Kalon Harrison, Football West)

Ludovic Boi netted twice in quick succession in the first half along with Bobby Wilson, Spencer Harris, David Heagney, Captain Mark Pritchard and Mickey Roberts to have the visitors cruising. And while Scott Bushby pulled one back early in the second half for ECU there was no stopping a rampage Floreat as Heagney and Pritchard each snared second goals.

A positive start by Joondalup gave way just after the quarter hour when Floreat piled on three goals in the space of five minutes. A partially cleared corner was retrieved and crossed by Boi for Wilson to head in after 17 minutes. Wilson turned provider by nodding the ball back across the face of goal for Harris to poke in from a couple of metres. Boi then unleashed a precision shot from just outside the 18-yard box across goalkeeper Andy Banks and inside the far post. Joondalup were twice denied a reply, Tommy Amphlett crashing onto the crossbar and a few minutes later Dave Calder’s shot brought a superb reflex save from Brad Eiffe.

An unmarked Boi punished those misses in the 27th minute by tucking into the net the rebound from a Pritchard shot which cannoned back off the bar. Floreat’s fifth goal came just three minutes later, Heagney applying a low finish which gave Banks no chance of saving. Joondalup coach responded by bringing on Nick Tatasciore but just six minutes later he was harshly red carded by referee Tim Mihevc for bringing Heagney down inside the 18-yard box. And to rub salt into the wound Pritchard converted from the spot to make it six-nil. The half had just ticked into stoppage time when Roberts calmly netted from a Boi cross.

Joondalup managed to find an avenue to goal ten minutes into the second half through Bushby. But two minutes later a reckless challenge by the goal score left Mihevc no choice but to red card the goal scorer, leaving Joondalup to see out the game with nine men. The remainder of the afternoon was not surprisingly little more than a training session for Floreat. Their eighth goal came after 75 minutes with Heagney nodding in a fine cross to the far post by substitute Jarrad Smith. A minute later Pritchard converted his second penalty, this one awarded after a cross out of the air by Nick Davies, who was lucky not to also be issued his marching orders.
