Missed chances costly as Bayswater leave with the points

ECU Joondalup missed a number of early chances as visitors Bayswater City boosted their hopes of All Flags State Premier League survival with a 2-0 win at The ECU Arena on Saturday. (Report by Football West Reporter Tommy Doleman)

Both strikes came inside three first half minutes and both were penalties emphatically netted by the league’s leading marksman Gustavo Marulanda.

Efforts from ECU to get back into the contest were spirited but their profligacy in front of goal showed once again, having only scored more than Mandurah this season.

But the home side started brighter in surprise sunshine and John Thornley could have given them the perfect start, only to hit the side netting after rounding Gianni Papalia.

Thornley was again in the action seven minutes later, this time the City goalkeeper stayed on his feet and denied the striker with a good save.

It was a dominating first quarter of an hour from the hosts but a rare foray forward from Bayswater saw Gavin Knight fouled in the area. Marulanda stepped up to smash his penalty into the roof of the net for his fifth goal in three matches and it was to get even better minutes later.

A short back pass from Marc Rodgers sold Andy Banks short and having committed to the tackle, he could only fell Bryan McKeown. Once again it was Marulanda who kept his nerve from 12 yards, hitting the exact same spot and taking his goal tally to 13 for the season.

Soon after Matt Italiano had a great chance to half the deficit, but his back-post header rattled off the post after great work from Tom Jones down the left.

Marulanda had opportunities to seal his hat-trick on either side of half time but on both occasions he was foiled by some good goalkeeping from Banks.

John Higgins performed well throughout for ECU and his free kick stung the palms of Papalia as he tried to find his team a way back into the match.

Papalia was then called into action again to deny Thornley and then Scott Bushy with an excellent double save as Bayswater continued to hold firm.

With ten minutes to play, Thornley’s unlucky day in front of goal was summed up when his toe-poke towards an open goal was somehow kept out by a desperate City defence.

John Kearney nearly put the gloss on a terrific performance for the visitors when his curler grazed the crossbar, but it didn’t matter as Bayswater closed in on the top half of the league with back-to-back wins.
