ECU Joondalup have entered their two week break on a high after defeating Floreat Athena 3-2 at ECU Joondalup on Saturday.

“Absolutely delighted,” was the comment from ECU Joondalup’s coach Steve Amphlett as he commended his team for playing extremely well, creating more chances than they had for a while. “I was nervous at the end because we were desperate for a win,” he said. “But it was a fantastic win and we’ll drive on from there.”

Despite Floreat kicking off, Joondalup quickly stole the show dominating play for much of the first half with three corners for Joondalup in the first five minutes.

The corners continued and in the 18th minute Charlie Comyn-Platt opened up the scoreboard for Joondalup when he received a well-placed corner at the back post sent over by Jordan Withey.

Floreat were unable to get a break as Joondalup continued a great display of passing and strong attack leaving Floreat chasing the ball.

Injured goal scorer, Charlie Comyn-Platt briefly paused play and brought Joondalup down to ten men in the 25th minute after a struggle in front of Floreat’s goal had him leave the pitch for two minutes.

Floreat’s first corner in the 30th minute showed promise, when James Isaia’s corner was headed just over the crossbar.

Floreat had found their feet and after a number of shots on goal they were rewarded in the 37th minute with Jarrad Smith’s cross from the left finding Callum O’Connell’s perfectly timed header. The score was one-all as half time came and went.

A corner again gave Joondalup a one-up advantage eight minutes into the second half when John Higgins’ corner almost curved in for a goal, only to be rebounded off the crossbar and sent to the back of the net by Ross Anderson’s strike.

Floreat answered upping the pressure on ECU Joondalup as even play kept both goal keepers on the ready. A superb diving save by Floreat goalie, Alex Dunn, was nothing short of spectacular, and would have made for a great photo shoot as he caught the ball horizontal in mid-air.

A late substitute in the 72nd minute proved to be well timed for Joondalup when John Stynes scored two minutes after coming on, giving them a 3-1 lead.

Tackles increased as the ball was sent back and forth resulting in one yellow card for the match against Floreat’s Liam Boland. Minutes later it was Floreat’s turn for a free kick enabling James Isaia’s long distance goal a chance for Floreat to push for an equaliser.

The final moments of extra time had the crowd watching the ref and linesman when Floreat achieved the equaliser only to have it disallowed due to offside.

Floreat assistant coach, Taki Nicoladis, said despite the boys putting in the effort at the end, it was too little too late. “Joondalup were a lot hungrier on the day and first to most balls and put away their chances, so full credit to them.”
