ECU 18’s into Solo Cup Quarter final

This was a much better performance from ECU following the loss to Stirling Lions in the league game on 23 April.  From the moment the game started ECU looked ‘in the mood’ and Steve Sokol had three good chances early in his comeback game after injury.  He scored with his fourth chance in the 22 minute after some fine work down the right wing between Liam Chapman, Alex Davies and Danny Dixon.  Dixon played in a fine ball to Sokol who’s quickly taken first time shot deceived the keeper to give ECU a 1-0 lead.  Dixon was creating havoc on the right wing and young Ross Millard was doing likewise on the left as an attacking looking ECU played their best football of the season against a young but very physical and determined Rockingham side.

On 27 minutes, and against the run of play, Rockingham were level.  An unnecessary foul on the edge of the box by Chapman was penalised with a delightful free kick which beat the ECU wall and keeper Ahrens to make it 1-1.  A minute later a second free kick to Rockingham put the home side in front.  From a more central position the same player lined up and once again drove the ball past several ECU players and the keeper to put Rockingham 2-1 in front.  From a side who looked like they might be in for a torrid morning, Rockingham suddenly came to life and rattled ECU for a ten minute spell.  In between time ECU mounted several breaks, usually involving Dixon or Millard, and on 33 minutes a Dixon cross was met by Declan Hargreaves who headed in to make it 2-2.  ECU was back in the game and five minutes later they were back in front.  A fine move down the right again involving full back Davies and Dixon resulted in Dixon firing in a powerful low drive past the Rocky keeper.

The second half started as the first half ended with ECU mounting attack after attack down the right.  Some great balls from Hargreaves, Tucker and Hamilton gave Dixon plenty of the ball and he played some delightful balls in to the Rockingham box.  On 55  minutes a searching long ball from Liam Chapman found Dixon again who drove at the heart of the Rockingham defence before curling in a high cross which deceived the keeper and hit the bar.  A very strong swirling wind contributed to that and it caused havoc for both teams in the second half – particularly keeper Ahrens who found several kicks coming back into his own box!!

In the 57th minute another fine long ball from Chapman was flicked on delightfully by Hargreaves to Dixon who gained 30 metres down the flank before playing in a great ball to Sokol in the box.  Sokol played the ball back into the path of the oncoming Hargreaves who drove his shot past the keeper to make it 4-2 with the best move of the game.

Daniel Dixon was injured in another fine run on 67 minutes and young Damien Simic joined the fray and was soon involved in more attacking moves by ECU.  On the left flank Strachan, Millard and Burgess combined before Millard found Hargreaves with a delightful ball and the inventive chip from Hargreaves was inches over the bar.

On 71 minutes Rockingham started a mini resurgence with a series of corners.  Ross Millard headed the first for another corner, then the follow up corner resulted in a shot just wide. ECU played out a comfortable final 10 minutes with the defence holding firm and ensuring a good win and advancement to the next round of the cup.  Well Done Boys!!
