Diamond sinks ECU with late winner

Armadale came from behind to notch an important 3-2 win over ECU Joondalup, which temporarily eases their relegation fears, and made it back-to-back defeats for Syd Amphlett’s side.

Goals from John Thornley and new signing Tommy Jones, and a Matt Barlow’s brace and made the score 2-2 all early in the second period, before Ross Diamond superbly netted the winner with 15 minutes remaining.

But the match will be remembered for an ill-tempered scrap which saw three players sent off and a couple of others cautioned in a mad few minutes.

Earlier, James Robinson put the Army on the front foot early with an acrobatic effort that forced a great save from Andy Banks.

There were plenty of chances in the opening stages and Thornley had ECU’s first chance on ten minutes when he turned and stung the palms of Cyril Sharrock.

Matt Barlow came close to breaking the deadlock for the visitors when his free kick flashed just wide of Banks’ left upright.

But ECU took the lead on 24 minutes when a route one ball from Banks was flicked on by the head of Thornley and Jones had the simple job of sliding it past an onrushing Sharrock

Tom Robinson should have equalised almost immediately but he somehow missed from point blank range after good work from Barlow down the right.

They didn’t have to wait long to level the scores though as Barlow this time was the recipient of a lovely cross from Matt Bennion, which he duly headed home.

In the second period the outstanding James Robinson glided down the left hand side and after some nice footwork, managed to lift his shot onto the top of the net.

Despite Armadale’s better start to the half, it was ECU who regained the lead in the 55th minute. A cross wasn’t dealt with by the visitors defence and Thornley crashed home from six yards.

Back came Armadale though, and they equalised for the second time in the match just three minutes later when James Robinson’s cross found its way to Barlow who capitalised from inside the area.

Thornley had a chance to score to put ECU back ahead when he nicely turned his man inside out, only to strike into side netting.

And that miss was to prove costly as substitute Ross Diamond had all the time in the world to lash in a wonderful swerving effort from 25 yards that Banks had no chance of reaching.

A chaotic few minutes followed when Dale McCulloch’s two footed lunge ignited a melee that saw Charlie Comyn-Platt and Warren Beattie subsequently red carded as well.

It could have been four late when James Robinson’s long range attempt was tipped over superbly by Banks, but 3-2 was good enough for the Army as they took home a vital three points.
