Once again, it was the dangerous strike duo of Stephen Burton (two goals) and Ashley Rosindale that did the damage after the visitors held their own in the first period.

Joondalup’s attack didn’t really gel at all and in the end their defence was overwhelmed by a Balcatta side who continue to set the benchmark in this season’s All Flags State Premier League.

It was a slow start to the match with neither side able to sustain a regular period of possession. Moe Atak had the first real effort which was well saved by Andy Banks.

ECU conjured up a half chance when an excellent turn from John Thornley put him through on goal but his touch was slightly heavy and Lewis Italiano did enough to rescue the situation.

Thornley was in the thick of the action moments later when his mazy run across the penalty area ended up in a deflected effort that was again saved by Italiano.

Next to try his luck was Ashley Rosindale when he weaved his way in the penalty area and made space for the shot, but it skewed wide of the target.

The rest of the half remained goalless but it was Rosindale who broke the deadlock with a wonderful strike from outside the area.

A set piece wasn’t properly cleared by the Joondalup defence and the Balcatta ten showed superb technique to lash in a half volley with power and precision.

It could have been 2-0 shortly after when Daniel Micevski whipped in a lovely deep cross from the right but Stephen Burton blazed over from six yards.

Burton’s goal did arrive though when some lovely interplay between the front two led to the striker curling a nice effort over Banks in the ECU net.

ECU needed a goal to get back into the match and after a double substitution from Syd Amphlett, a corner from the left nearly found its way straight into the back of the net.

Spencer Harris should have added a third towards the end but his attempted volley dribbled wide.

Instead, it was Burton who added the finish touches as he broke the offside trap and slotted under an advancing Banks.

Perth’s win means that Balcatta continue to sit two points clear at the summit but with the Knights and Sorrento not in action today, they maintain a stranglehold on a likely top-two finish.
