New ECU Joondalup recruit Nelson Tshongo has settled in nicely at the campus, and he couldn’t be more pleased after a win in his first game for the club in the NPLWA Night Series opener against Perth Glory.
“It’s great to be here and if I’m being honest ECU so far for me has been very different from any of the clubs I’ve been at,” he said.
“The staff, coaches and players have been very welcoming and encouraging, making it a little easier to find my feet and get to business. It was good to get off the mark on my debut for the club with a win.
“Not only just getting the win was satisfying but I think the way we played as well. And of course, there are areas that we still need to improve on but I think we’re on the right path.
The 21-year-old has developed his game in WA and worked with some talented coaches, and with Kenny Lowe at the Jacks the decision to
head north was an easy one.
“ECU was very impressive last season and well deserving for the title of NPL champions, with Kenny here it was definitely a major factor in me joining the club,” he explained.
“And for a young player I think developing is always the key aspiration wherever you want to go and for someone like Kenny to be at the centre of it don’t think it’s a hard choice.
“I developed under Richard Abrams at Inglewood in the U18s for a few sessions and had stints at Gwelup at first team level and returning to Inglewood in 2019 but things didn’t go as I had planned, and last season I was at Floreat playing under Ante Kovacevic.”
The defender missed last week’s draw against Inglewood United, but returns for tonight’s game against Rockingham City and he is expecting a tough game, but he is looking forward to getting back into action.
“I think Rockingham have put together a good team under their new coach, so it will be exciting to see how we go against them” he said.
“I think the key will be just for the lads to stick to the rules which will determine which direction the game goes.”
