Jacks stunned by Reds

The Jacks first home game of the season at the ECU Football Stadium, on Saturday afternoon didn’t go to plan, going down 4-0 to Armadale in Week Two of the National Premier Leagues WA.

First half goals from Cherno Bah and Pieter Jacobsz had the visitors in control, and it could have been worse but Johnny Perkins saved Friday Zico’s penalty.

The Jacks pressed after half time but couldn’t find a way back into the game and the visitors added two more with second half substitutes Joshua Cortes and Chad Nilson finding the net.

“I thought we started really well and had a few decent chances, but we gave away two sloppy goals and were on the back foot from there,” Head Coach Kenny Lowe said.

“We struggled to get our game going throughout the game, and fair play to Armadale they took their chances well and deserved the win.

“We have a great chance to turn things around on Thursday evening at Inglewood, but we need to turn up then.”

The Jacks went into the game unchanged from the side that beat Gwelup Croatia last weekend, while Tom Hough returned from injury to take his place on the bench.

Armadale arrived on the back of a heavy defeat last week and it was the Jacks on the front foot early, and went close after only three minutes.

Daryl Nicol was sent down the left by Jakub Prajza’s pass, and his shot from the angle was saved by Armadale keeper Yousri Gharsallah.

But three minutes later, and with their first attack, Armadale hit the front. Jacobsz sent former Jacks’ striker Manase Abandelwa down the right and his cross was turned home by Cherno Bah.

The Jacks looked for a quick response and Andy Higgins’ shot from the edge of the box was saved low by Gharsallah, before Higgins’ free kick was headed wide by Danny Hodgson.

The on 37 minutes Armadale were awarded a penalty, after the lively Bah was brought down in the area by Nelson Tshongo, and referee Joshua Nixon pointed straight to the spot.

South Sudan international defender Friday Zico stepped up to take the resulting spot kick, but Johnny Perkins guessed the right way to save.

But four minutes later the Reds did double their advantage. The Jacks gave the ball away at the back, and Bah slipped Jacobsz in on goal and he fired low past Perkins.

In stoppage time the Jacks went close to pulling one back, Nicol and Higgins’ combined, the later seeing his shot pushed around the post by Gharsallah. From the resulting corner, Gharsallah pushed Nicol’s effort onto the bar, but at the break the visitors were in control.

The Jacks had a penalty shout early in the second half, substitute Luke Davis sent Nicol racing down the left, and he fell under a challenge of Callum Mellowship, but the referee waved away their protests.

They went close again on 74 minutes, Chris Harold sent Prajza down the right, his cross found Higgins in the six-yard-box, his shot looked destined for the net, but Harry Quigley was in the way, the ball bouncing off the defender and out for a corner.

That near miss showed it wasn’t going to be the Jacks day, and it got worse six minutes later, when Armadale added a third.

The Jacks were pushing players forward looking for goals, and Abandelwa’s long-range shot crashed off the crossbar, but Cortes was on hand to head the ball into an empty net.

Still the Jacks pressed forward and Riak fired into the side netting after Higgins’ free kick, before Nicol sent in substitute Ban Hinshelwood, but the big striker delayed his shot and the chance was gone.

But in the final minute Armadale added a fourth, Jacobsz finding Nilson, who held off his marker and finished clinically past Perkins.

The Jacks returned to NPLWA action on Thursday evening when they travel to Inglewood Stadium to take on Inglewood United – Kick-off 7.30pm
