Jacks let it slip against Inglewood

The Jacks have let a two-goal lead slip late, to eventually draw 2-2 with the unbeaten Inglewood United in Week Four of the NPLWA Night Series at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium on Sunday evening.

Danny Hodgson converted a penalty, and Chris Harold added another to give the Jacks a deserved lead at the break. But late goals from Ajak Riak and Adam Falcone gave both sides a share of the spoils. (Photos by Fotoenzo)

“I thought we played well for 80 minutes and dominated in most areas,” midfielder Declan Hughes said post-match.

“It’s still early in preseason, but we need to work more on our fitness to see games out, but some of the football we played tonight was great, just that final ten minutes let us down, but there were some positives to take out of the game.”

Head Coach Kenny Lowe brought his senior players back for this one, but made two changes to the side that beat Perth Glory, with Jeremy Tshongo and Danny Hodgson coming into the side, with Nelson Tshongo and Andy Higgins both unavailable.

It was bright start with chances at both ends. First Inglewood almost gifted the Jacks the opener, giving the ball away at the back, but Alex Dunn got down well to save Hodgson’s effort. Moments later Abdul Sesay crossed from the right, but Riak’s effort was saved low by Johnny Perkins.

Sesay was in again on the quarter hour, cut inside his marker but shot straight at Perkins. The Jacks custodian was needed again moments later, getting down superbly to tip Sesay’s curling effort wide.

Harold and Daryl Nicol were a constant threat, and the pair combined on 25 minutes, with Nicol’s shot on the run saved by Dunn, before Nicol crossed to Harold at the back post who headed wide.

Dunn then produced the save of the match, tipping Hodgson’s free kick over the top at full stretch as the Jacks lifted the tempo, and on 39 minutes they found the opener.

Referee Josh Mannella spotted a foul in the box by Mark Barnett and he pointed to the spot. Hodgson stepped up and converted a Panenka from the resulting penalty.

Inglewood almost hit back in the second minute of stoppage time, Robert Petkov’s shot on the run beat Perkins, but the post came to the rescue of the Jacks gloveman.

But seconds later the Jacks doubled their lead. Inglewood failed to clear their lines, after Harold’s effort was cleared off the line and he punished them second time around, to send them into the break with a two-goal lead.

ECU were on the front foot early on the second half with Harold and Daryl Nicol again in the thick of the action, Nicol firing wide after being sent clear by Hughes, before Sam Riak’s long-range effort was straight at Dunn.

But they couldn’t find a third to finish the game off, and Inglewood lifted. Shane Cassidy got back with a last-ditch block to deny Petkov, before Perkins stood tall to deny the big Inglewood striker.

Inglewood coach Andres Oliveira went to his bench bringing on Adam Falcone and he had an immediate impact crossing to Ajak Riak to score on 78 minutes.

The pendulum had swung and Inglewood pressed and they had the ball in the net again four minutes later, Barnett heading home, but the referee had spotted a foul on the box.

But they did level six minutes from time, a mistake at the back was punished by the alert Falcone, who finished from close-range.

The Jacks were defending deep to keep Inglewood out, and they had a scare in the final minute when a shot struck the arm of a Jacks defender, but the referee was well positioned to wave away their strong protests.

The Jacks are back in action on Friday evening, when they take on Rockingham City at Dalmatinac Park – Kick off 6.30pm.
