A hat-trick from top goalscorer Frankie Murray has helped the ECU Joondalup Women’s side to a 5-2 win against Balga in their final State League Women’s Division One game of the season.
Other goals from Jessica Tilford and Denkenesh Hayes sealed the win, and saw the Jacks finish third on the ladder, this after Sorrento beat Armadale 2-0 in their final game,

It was a great achievement in their first season in the competition. “I am as proud has I can be with these young ladies,” Jacks Head Coach Terry Maton explained.

“They worked hard from start to finish to achieve a respectable place in the State League table and in my opinion, they achieved what their hard work deserved third in the table happy days.”

It was perfect start for the side, and they were ahead on 13 minutes. The ball was passed back to Tilford outside the 18-yard box and her shot floated into the top of the net.

They doubled their lead on 32 minutes. Emily Chang ran through from defence and slipped a ball straight into the six-yard box giving Murray an easy finish.

It was 3-0 four minutes later, Danielle Maton’s shot rebounded to Murray, who made no mistake.

Balga hit back, and pulled one back before half time with Katie Griffin on target. The visitors then made it 3-2 on 75 minutes, Catherine Aftera scoring, and it was game on.

But the Jacks hit back immediately with Murray adding another, completing her hat-trick. A perfect through ball from Amy Buchanan sent Murray clear, the keeper raced out to clear, but her attempted clearance rebounded off Murray and she tapped the ball into an empty net.

Balga continued to push forward, but it was the Jacks that sealed points in the final minute.  Murray made space down the flank and cut inside the penalty area, before unselfishly squaring the ball to Hayes, who side footed home to seal the win.

“I was so pleased as it was my first goal of the season,” Hayes said. “Then to have my team mates celebrate with me felt special.”
