ECU Joondalup under 20’s, have been edged out 1-0 by Bayswater City in Sunday’s NPLWA Finals Series Cup Final at Dorrien Gardens.

Ismail Haji’s deflected shot had given Bayswater the lead after only 16 minutes and keeper Joe Pollard kept us in the game with some smart saves.

But in the final minute of stoppage time it looked like the Jacks had equalised, but Sonny O’Shea’s goal was controversially disallowed for a handball

“I thought the lads deserved something from the game for a spirited performance, and we thought we had it in the final minutes, but the referee saw something we didn’t, which is disappointing,” Jacks coach Rob Mahan said.

“We can go on about the decision till the cows come home, but it won’t change anything. I was super happy with my players on Sunday, we controlled the second half and had a number of good chances to level, but we weren’t clinical enough in the final third.

“It has been a good first season for me at the club, and I’d like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity, and we move on to 2021.”

The Jacks, who beat Champions Perth SC in Wednesday’s Semi-finals, made a good start and Manase Abandelwa shot flew over the top, before O’Shea’s snap shot drifted wide.

But City hit back and Pollard had to be alert to save Igor Cvijanovic’s long range shot on 10 minutes. It was end to end and five minutes later Rene Kisesa shot on the run was saved by Pollard.

It was Bayswater who opened the scoring on 17 minutes. The Jacks lost the ball in the middle of the park and Leonard Gama raced forward and found Haji whose shot deflected off Jacks midfielder O’Shea and lopped over the stranded Pollard.

ECU went close to levelling on the half hour, Kisesa’s free kick picked out Luke Davis, who headed inches over the top. Both sides pressed late, but at half time it was Bayswater leading 1-0.

It was the Jacks who went close early in the second half, when good work down the left by Dor Jok, ended with a cross into the box to O’Shea, but he was crowded out and the chance was gone.

Then on the hour Jok’s shot on the run flashed wide of the target, after good work from Nick Rhodes. Pollard then came to the rescue for the Jacks, producing two great saves on as many minutes.

First on 62 minutes the Jacks custodian saved well from Shaun Mukwevho, before producing an even better one to deny Gama one-on-one.

Rob Mahan’s side weren’t going down without a fight and Kisesa’s long range shot was tipped on to the post by keeper, and from the resulting corner Jok’s shot was saved low by keeper.

The Bayswater keeper was on the action again moments later, coming out bravely to save at the feet of Abandelwa, who had been sent clear by a neat through ball from Kisesa.

The Jacks were finishing the game the better, and O’Shea’s shot on the run was deflected wide, but I’m the fourth minute of stoppage time it looked like their late pressure had been rewarded.

A ball into the box found O’Shea, who turned the ball home and set off wild celebrations. But their joy was short lived after the referee Niall Gillmor spoke to his assistant and disallowed the goal for handball, much to the disappointment of Jacks players and coaches.

It was a little harsh, but that turned out to be the final action the referee sounding the whistle moments later, and the 20’s season came to an end.
