Jacks host Floreat Athena in final hit out of Pre-Season

ECU Joondalup Soccer Club will have their final hit out of the pre-season on Saturday when they host fellow NPL side Floreat Athena at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon. (3.00pm)

Kenny Lowe’s side put in a good performance last week to beat Forrestfield United 3-1 and like all pre-season games the coach changed the whole outfield side at half-time to give players in the squad as much game time as possible.

There is good news on the injury front with skipper Johnny Perkins fit and available for selection, while Harry Evans has trained well this week and is also in line to be part of the game.

Evans said it’s good to be back on the park. “I’ve been picking up a couple of niggles since returning to proper training so hopefully no more,” he said.

“I’m looking to get back firing on all cylinders as the break hasn’t helped me personally as need a run of games to get me back to my best and full fitness.”

Evans watched on when the Jacks beat Forrestfield last week and he said it was a good performance. “It was a good win for the lads against a decent Forrestfield side,” he explained.

“So, to be able to swap the team completely at half time with still a few boys out injured shows what depth and quality we have throughout.

“Saturday will be a big test for us, they (Floreat) are a quality side and have some good players but so have we so will be interesting to see how we do.”

New midfielder Sami Riak said things are going nicely with the squad and last weeks run out against Forrestfield was a great work out. “Forrestfield are one of the best teams in their league and have quality players within their squad, so it was a good win for us,” he said.

“But the focus was solely on ourselves in terms of putting in the work we had been doing at the training ground as a team into a game situation and obviously to improve our fitness levels and I thought they lads did that really well because the gaffer was really happy with the way we went about it.”

Riak, who joined the Jacks from Inglewood along with Evans this season, said Saturday is a great lead up to the new season. “Saturday’s game against Floreat will be very a competitive one even though it’s only a friendly game because they are one of the top teams in NPL who got superior quality compared to previous games,” he explained.

“It will be good hit out and also it will give us another chance before the season starts next week to work on a few things we’ve done in training during the week in a game environment.”
