ECU Joondalup SC Women’s side headed south on Sunday in week six of the Women’s State League Division One to take on second placed South West Phoenix, at WML Stadium in Bunbury.

The side put in another good performance, but were edged out 4-2. It was the first defeat in three games and Coach Terry Maton said despite the loss it’s been a great start to the season for the new side. (Photos Courtesy of South West Phoenix)

“If I’m honest some of the goals we conceded we’re avoidable, but I feel our opponents showed more composure on the ball than us,” he explained.

“But we had chances that we did not finish. As I’ve said before this team is work in progress and will go again next week.

“We’ve played 6 won 3 drew 1 and lost 2 and are fourth on the ladder so for a new team playing together for the first time that’s not the worst start – Onwards and upwards girls.”

The Jacks made the perfect start and were ahead after only four minutes. Danielle Maton’s lob from a free kick from 20 meters gave the Phoenix keeper no chance.

But their lead only lasted two minutes, with Nicole Suttie on target. Suttie then gave the hosts the lead on 16 minutes, but the Jacks weren’t going down without a fight and they levelled on 35 minutes.

Frankie Murray raced down the right, and cut inside her marker before finding the top corner of the net.

It was a tight second half with both sides going close, but it was the Phoenix who grabbed the important third goal on the hour with Ava Richards scoring.

The Jacks pressed looking for the equaliser, but it was the Phoenix who added a fourth six minutes later, with the impressive Suttie completing her hat-trick.

The Jacks continued to press forward but they couldn’t find another goal, with the Phoenix winning and moving to the top of the table.

The Jacks are back in State League Division One action next Sunday when they host Stirling Lions at the ECU Football Stadium- kick off 3.00pm
