ECU Joondalup’s six game unbeaten NPLWA winning streak has come to an end after a narrow 1-2 loss against Floreat Athena in the NPLWA Top Six game at E&D Litis Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Nick Ambrogio gave the hosts the lead just after half time, before Callum Timmins levelled with five minutes to go. It looked like the points would be shared but a late goal from second half substitute Robert Harding gave Floreat the win.

“Disappointing result for us, but I thought we dominated for large period, and if Riley’s effort had gone in earlier in the game, it could have been a different result,” Jacks Head Coach Kenny Lowe said.

“We conceded just after half time, but again the lads fought back and I thought when we leveled, we could have gone and won it, but we shot ourselves in the foot in the final minute.

“We move on from tonights game, and will need to be at our best against a good Gwelup side on Saturday.

“We’re in a finals series, and the games are coming thick and fast, but I’m confident we can go to Gwelup and get a result, if we play like I know we can.”

Lowe made the one change from the side that convincingly beat Armadale on Saturday, with Timmins coming in for Ethan Brooks, who dropped to the bench.

It was a confident start from the Jacks and Riley Warland’s long-range shot crashed off the crossbar early, before Floreat Jason Saldaris saved well to deny Saturday’s hat-trick hero Danny Hodgson’s dink moments later.

Warland was on defending duties before the break as Floreat went close to opening the scoring, the defender in the right place to block Chris Saldaris effort, but the sides went to the interval goalless in an entertaining game.

The deadlock was broken by the home side a minute into the second period as Chris Saldaris made space down the right and crossed for Nick Ambrogio to finish from close range.

Floreat, who were beaten in their opening top six game by Sorrento on Saturday looked to add to their lead, but Jacks keeper Johnny Perkins saved from Luka Ninkovic’s header.

The Jacks weren’t going down without a fight and created a number of half chances, and on 86 minutes they deservedly found the equaliser.

Bayley Brown-Montgomery, raced into the box and was brought down and referee Josh Mannella pointed straight to the spot.

Timmins stepped up and sent his penalty straight down the middle, giving Jason Saldaris no chance and scoring his third goal in two games.

It looked like the points would be shared but in the final minute the Jacks gave possession away and Ludovic Boi found Harding who headed over Perkins and into the net via the crossbar.

Both sides now have one win and one loss heading to Round Three on Saturday, but the Jacks are in second spot on goal difference, behind leaders Cockburn City.
