The only goal of the game came early from signing Danny Hodgson, the win keeps Kenny Lowe’s side in contention of a Semi-final spot.

“It’s great to get a win over a good team like Cockburn,” Jacks midfielder Tom Hough said. “I thought we defended well as a team and stayed solid throughout the 90 minutes to get a deserved 1-0 win.”

Lowe made two changes to the side that were edged out by Perth SC last week with Hodgson coming in for his debut for the injured Ellis Healing, while Bayley Brown-Montgomery replaced Ben Hinshelwood up front, who took his place on the bench.

Cockburn were also beaten in the opening round by Bayswater, but it was the Jacks who made the perfect start in this one taking the lead after only nine minutes. Andy Higgins whipped a ball into the penalty area and Hodgson got in between two Cockburn defenders to head home.

The Jacks pressed for a second but they suffered a blow on 20 minutes losing Tommy Amphlett with injury, he was replaced by teenager Matthew Dench.

Hodgson went close to second before the break after he spotted the keeper off his line, but his long-range chip on the turn drifted inches over the top.

After half time Cockburn went in search of the equaliser, but the Jacks defence, superbly lead by Ryan Lowry kept them at bay.

Hodgson had another opportunity mid-way through the second half after he was sent clear by Dench, but Luke Radonich stood talk to deny the striker. Cockburn pushed men forward late in the game but they couldn’t find a way past keeper Johnny Perkins.

The Cockerels were reduced to ten men when Anthony Skorich was shown a second-year card by Julian Serra and was sent off. Jacks striker Bayley Brown-Montgomery said it was good to get their first win.

“I thought the game went really well, and it was our first clean sheet of the season, so that’s great for our defensive side of the game,” he said. “We do need to score some more goals but that I’ll come in the next few games with us all gelling together and figuring out our new tactics and formations.”
