Under 20’s in Cup Quarter-final action on Monday

ECU Joondalup under 20’s are in State League Cup action on Monday when they visit Alfred Skeet Reserve to take on Armadale in Round three. (12.45pm)

The youngsters produced a battling performance to beat an experienced Dianella White Eagles in the last round, with Ben Hinshelwood scoring a second half winner.

The striker said it was good all-round team performance, despite the opposition getting physical later in the game. “The team performance was fantastic against strong team packed with ex ECU players who normally play first team football,” he said.

“The players who came up to the team were excellent, and it was a great to score the winner after hitting the post and crossbar with header and lobbing the keeper earlier, I nicked it off centre back and stuck into the corner of goal.”

Hinshelwood was in the UK for trials at a number of clubs last season and the 16-year-old has also been pushing for a spot in the first team this season. The striker said they are looking forward to Monday’s game at a ground they lost in the Semi-Finals last season against Perth Glory.

“To be honest the Armadale ground is not a favourite after last year, and despite being the better team a momentary lapse late in the game cost us,” he explained.

“Armadale are always a difficult side to play against especially away and having to play them in league and then in cup two days later it will be a challenge, but if we continue to play like we did against Dianella and Balcatta we can hopefully make it through to the semis.”

Keeper George Jackson has been in great form, and he produced some great saves to keep the Jacks in the last round, and like Hinshelwood said it was a great team performance.

“It was a great win, especially with them bringing down first team players which gave the boys that extra motivation to win,” he said.

“After going one up and then them equalising with a sloppy goal just before halftime, the boys Dug in and came out with the result and showed the determination of the young side which has several 18’s players who all stepped up which made the win all the more satisfying,

“Personally, stepping up to the 20’s is a challenge, but I feel like I’ve had a good couple of games under my belt and am high on confidence at the moment. Against Dianella luck was on my side and everything seemed to go my way with the saves I made.”

Jackson said it’s a huge challenge playing Armadale, especially at their place, but they are ready for the challenge. “Playing against Armadale is always a tough game, especially away at Alfred Skeet Reserve which is always a hard place to play at with the crowd being loud,” he said.

“Armadale will have a physical side making the game a challenge and by no means easy, they will be looking to prove a point in the cup but all the boys are looking forward to the game and hopefully we can get the win and advance to the Semi-finals and then go on and win the cup.”
