Knowles leaves the Jacks

ECU Joondalup striker Joe Knowles has left the club and signed for NPL Victoria side Oakleigh Cannons.

The club worked hard to keep Knowles, a player who rose through the ranks of our clubs academy before signing for A-League side Perth Glory, where he made 15 appearances and scoring against Newcastle Jets in Round 10 2017, but Knowles said he needed to challenge himself and the move to Melbourne will do that. “I’m excited to move over to Melbourne and play for Oakleigh,” he said.

“I’ve made this decision to move out of my comfort zone and push myself to try get the best out of me and also to gain experience from this opportunity.”

The 23-year-old said he will be supporting the Jacks from a far next season. “I’d like to thank Dale McCulloch for looking after me since I’ve been with the Jacks. Also, a big thanks to David Tough, Ross Edwards and Jon Higgins and the rest of the coaching staff for the hard work they have put into last season.

Thanks to the boys for putting up with me and my moaning, they are a great bunch of lads and I have no doubt they will be a great team next year and will be turning those draws into wins. Good luck next season to everyone involved I’ll be supporting from Melbourne.”

ECU Joondalup SC Football Operations Manager Steve Amphlett wished the 23-year-old all the best. “Joe was great for us last season and obviously we did everything we could to keep him at the Campus, but there seems to be an exodus of WA players heading over to the NPLVIC this season,” he said.

“Joe is a quality player and a quality lad too and we hope the move can get him an opportunity in the A-League again, something we believe he deserves. We wish Joe all the best in future endeavours and hopefully one day he will head back to Perth and return to the Jacks.”
